[Spoilers C4E22] Monster Analysis (Sewer Battle)

Warning: Long

A few months ago, I started this series analyzing the stat blocks Brennan uses in his combats and hopefully giving my fellow critters a little more clarity on how Brennan builds his combats. Feel free to correct me or add a detail I missed. This post covers the fight in the sewers against the Crow Keepers and Laumy

Also, if you want to see the previous instalments in this series, here they are:

Obrimus Manor - [Spoilers C4E30] Monster analysis

Tertia - [Spoilers C4E18] Combat Stats

Zaghi

The leader of this particular group of Crow Keepers, Zaghi appears to use the stats of a bandit captain from the 5.5e Monster Manual. She had a CR of 2 and seemed to be actually stronger than the Guildmaster Solomon (Killed by Vaelus in episode 3), who had less than half of her total hp.

Laumy

The fey Raugrannath that the Crow Keepers had been working with uses a modified version of the Violet Fungus Necrohulk stat block. It was CR 7, and alone would already be considered a deadly enemy to the Schemers.

Bandits

The rank-and-file Crow Keepers seemed to have less than 12 hit points and also had a sneak attack feature. This doesn't match any written stat block, but I think they either are just level 1 rogues or use the bandit stat block with an added sneak attack.

The Party

This encounter was an example of the rare occasion that a plan goes perfectly right in dnd. None of the party took a single point of damage, and they got out with Demodus in tow. This encounter in particular was incredibly deadly, and if the party went in guns blazing, there would have probably been one, if not multiple character deaths.

Conclusion

So that was everything I compiled about this encounter. again, if there's something I missed, tell me. I'm probably going to try to make these more frequent, so give me your suggestions on what to do next.

[Spoilers C4E30] Monster analysis (Obrimus Manor)

Warning: Long

A while back I made a post analyzing the npc stats Brennan used in the encounter with Tertia, check it out here: https://www.reddit.com/r/criticalrole/comments/1u7k4ie/spoilers_c4e18_combat_stats_deva_vindicta/

Since then, I've been using the break to rewatch episodes and decided on posting an estimation of the monster stats used in the split party encounter in Obrimus Manor. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on anything, it's greatly appreciated.

The ghouls:

In the aviary, Thimble and Occtis fought a couple of these, which seem to be unchanged from their monster manual stats. They are CR 1, and have the second lowest CR in this encounter.

The zombies:

Of course, these guys take the crown of being the "weakest" in this encounter, even though they are responsible for the first real character death of this campaign. They are also unchanged from the monster manual, having a lowly CR of 1/4, but I personally think they were one of the reasons Julien couldn't have helped the brothers, as they have a trait that lets them make a con save to avoid being slain if they are reduced to 0 HP.

The ghosts:

Putting up the biggest fight to the aviary group, the ghosts were CR 4, making this a deadly encounter for them. The main difficulty about them was their damage, being able to do an average of 17 damage per round, so 2 of them could potentially down characters very easily.

The Boss:

The deadliest enemy of this encounter, Raimond Davinos doesn't match any prewritten enemy and is a Brennan original, it seems. He had high hit points at 127 and a decent AC of 17. His main multi attack did good damage because of the Obrimus Manor lair effect, and his special bloodied action gave him another attack on top of that. He had a bonus action grapple or claw, giving him at max four attacks. If all of these hit he could do easily over a hundred points of damage (On a non necrotic resistant enemy).

The Party:

Going into this team birdwatching was already injured from a previous fight, and specifically Teor used one of his desperate measures during and all of his lay on hands during it. Teor, for his part, took out 114 of Raimond's 127 hitpoints, which later helped Thimble finish him off. As Brennan mentioned, the aviary crew was also at risk of losing a character, since both Occtis and Thimble had low hit points. Had Brennan tossed it even one other ghost, and they might have went down before Julien arrived.

Conclusion:

So that was everything I gathered on this encounter. Like before, please tell me if I missed anything. I'm probably going to keep doing stuff like this and analyzing Brennan's combats so comment on anything you'd like to see next, as I'm not doing these in any particular order right now.

[Spoilers C4E18] Combat Stats (Deva Vindicta)

Warning: Long

I've rewatched a ton of Brennan's combats recently and decided to take a look at the monster stats he uses. In the spirit of critrolestats I'm gonna compile all of that information here. Please be welcome to (politely) correct me if I get something wrong.

The NPCs:

Dr. Talter seems to be using the statistics of an acolyte from the 2024 monster manual, judging by the spells she uses and Brennan calling one of her spells "radiant flame" which is an action exclusive to either the acolyte, priest, or archpriest stat blocks. She has the change of using intelligence as her casting modifier but the stat block is otherwise unchanged.

Dame Gaya Seremai (RIP) doesn't match to any stat block I've found, but she could be a warrior veteran, knight, guard captain, or just has a homebrew stat block. She probably has a high amount of hit points, considering she took a couple rounds of attacks from Tertia.

The Boss:

Tertia appears to use the stats of a Bone Devil from the 2024 monster manual. This is backed up by her number of attacks and her attack modifier (+8). Her hit points also matched, with her taking around 160 points of damage, and the average hit points of the bone devil being 161. Her sting attack did necrotic damage instead of poison, and didn't inflict the poisoned condition. Tertia is a challenge rating 9 creature, making her more deadly than the Knight of Seremai the soldiers faced in episode 10, who had a challenge rating of 8.

The Party:

Going into this, the party was already at a disadvantage considering they didn't rest after their last combat, and since this was a very deadly encounter for their level. If Occtis hadn't been able to ward off Tertia, there very well might have been a player character death.

Conclusion:

So that was basically everything I compiled about this combat so far. I'll probably do this again for other combats, so tell me if you want me to do a specific one, cause right now I don't actually know yet lol.
