How to Pressure Wash Your House in Amelia Island, FL Without Killing Your Plants | DIY House Washing Guide

DIY Protect Your Plants Like a Pro During a House Wash

As temperatures rise and humidity increases, this is the time of year when many homeowners start pressure washing and soft washing their homes to remove algae, mold, mildew, and dirt. One of the biggest mistakes DIYers make is focusing on the house while forgetting about the landscaping.

The attached photo shows the exact process we use to help protect delicate plants during a house wash.

Step 1: Thoroughly Water the Plants

Before applying any cleaning solution, soak all plants and the surrounding soil with fresh water.

Plants absorb whatever hits them first, so you want them taking in clean water instead of cleaning chemicals. This creates a protective buffer and helps dilute any incidental overspray.

Step 2: Install Garden Stakes

Place tall garden stakes around any delicate plants that need extra protection.

The stakes create a frame that keeps coverings elevated above the plant and prevents leaves from being crushed.

Step 3: Create a Tent Using Lightweight Tarps

Drape lightweight tarps or plastic sheeting over the stakes in a tent-like fashion.

This protects plants from overspray while still allowing airflow around them. Avoid wrapping plants tightly, as trapped heat can cause damage.

Step 4: Wash the House

Once your landscaping is protected, proceed with the house wash.

Pay attention to wind direction, spray patterns, and overspray. Controlled application is always safer than excessive spraying.

Step 5: Remove Coverings Immediately

As soon as the washing is complete, remove all tarps and coverings.

Leaving plants covered for too long can create a greenhouse effect, trapping heat and moisture that may damage or kill sensitive plants.

Step 6: Rinse Everything Again

After uncovering the plants, thoroughly rinse all vegetation and surrounding areas with fresh water.

This helps remove any remaining residue and provides additional protection.

Pro Tip: Rinse Indirectly

One of the most overlooked steps is how you rinse.

Instead of blasting plants directly with a hose nozzle, spray upward and allow the water to fall naturally over the plants like rainfall.

This indirect rinsing method is much gentler on leaves and stems and greatly reduces the chance of damage.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

Taking a few extra minutes to protect your landscaping can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars in plant replacement costs.

Whether you're pressure washing a driveway, soft washing siding, or cleaning a pool enclosure, proper plant protection should always be part of the process.
