Birmingham crash victim was 'lovely' student who died thousands of miles from family

The victim of a horrific Birmingham city centre crash was today named as a "lovely" student who died thousands of miles away from her family.

Anisha Chakraborty, 28, was an international student from India who worked part-time at restaurant chain Jimmy Spice's Broad Street branch.

She died after being struck by a black Audi RSQ8 on Dartmouth Middleway early on Saturday, May 30.

A 22-year-old man was arrested by West Midlands Police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs. He was later bailed.

Anisha's restaurant manager, Shefali Karulkar, has launched a fundraising campaign to repatriate her body and cover funeral costs.

She told BirminghamLive: "Anisha was a kind and lovely person, a quiet person who would always have a conversation with you.

"This fundraiser is important. She was an international student and her family don't speak English. It's a very difficult situation and they don't know what to do.

"I also came from India as an international student. To know you've lost your life in a country where you know no-one, I still feel how I did when I first found out."

West Midlands Police urged anyone with information to get in touch, including those with dashcam footage.

"You can get in touch with us via Live Chat on our website or by calling 101 quoting log 460 of May 30. You can also contact the SCIU team by emailing sciu@westmidlands.police.uk."

RIP Anisha.
