Advice: Hiking Options for Baby under 6months?

Looking for advice on the best type of carrier for a baby under 6months old to hike with? I’d really like to put him on my back but have heard that babies who cannot sit up independently shouldn’t be worn like that? He has good head control and can sit up with limited assistance. I typically wear him in a ring sling (but that seems less secure than I’d like as I amble up a mountain and not as balanced for a longer day). I do also have a front wrap carrier which I like but worried the traditional tie style I wear it in might make me trip as it’s harder to see my feet. I could make do but hoping you all might have good suggestions or other options I hadn’t thought about!
ETA: he’s fairly large over 16lbs (nearly 17) and over 24inches
