Introducing EDAMAME: A fully customizable COVAS replacement engine for Elite Dangerous (Looking for Voice Talent!)
I’m currently developing a project called EDAMAME (Elite Dangerous Audio Mixing, Automation, & Management Engine). It’s designed to let you EASILY replace your ship's COVAS voice with whatever custom audio clips you want for any in-game event.
Think of it like a community-driven, fully modular alternative to HCS Voice Packs.
How it works under the hood:
- The Core: It runs through VoiceAttack and relies heavily on EliteAPI to read real-time game telemetry directly from your cockpit.
- No Mic Required: Unlike traditional VoiceAttack profiles, you don't have to speak a single command (or even own a microphone) to use it. It functions entirely as a reactive audio engine triggered by your ship's state, though it can easily be integrated into your existing voice-command profiles.
- Dynamic Handling: It features built-in priority queueing (no overlapping voice lines) and smart synchronization (it knows to stay silent if your native in-game COVAS option for that event is turned on).
- Simple Modular Design: Custom voice packs (which I'm calling "Pods") are just cleanly structured folders with organized, intuitively named .wav files (e.g., Hull_Shields_And_Cabin_Pressure\Shields_Offline.wav). If you can copy-paste files into a folder, you can build a voice pack for it.
Looking for Voice Talent! The proof-of-concept version I’m running in my development build uses a tongue-in-cheek voice pack that I obviously can't legally distribute. Because of that, I want to release the project with a completely original, high-quality community voice pack.
If you are a voice actor, aspiring voice talent, or just someone with a great mic and a killer sci-fi delivery who wants to get involved, I would love to team up! I have the entire asset list of required event phrases ready to go.
Drop a comment below or shoot me a DM if you're interested in voicing an original ship AI, or if you have any questions about the engine!
Fly safe, Commanders!
