A club president can't force a player to leave per se. Sure he can ask managers to sit particular players out, but many managers won't accept to be puppets, especially the good ones.

Instead of players running out their contracts and refusing to leave, Mourinho is that managers who'll force them out. He has the personality to face star players as opposed to others.
