Throwback to one of our visits sa akong cousin’s place in LLC. I still remember that simple pamainit: puto maya, homemade sikwate made with pure tablea from Surigao, ug scrambled eggs. Simple ra kaayo, pero grabe ka-comforting. 🤎

Grabe, lami gyud kaayo ang puto maya! Sticky siya pero dili gyud latâ. The texture was just right, with a subtle hint of ginger and the perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness.

Na-curious gyud mi nganong lahi kaayo iyang texture, so we asked my cousin’s mother-in-law, who is a lumad and the one who made the puto maya. She told us that making puto maya has been a family tradition passed down through generations, and this is the traditional way they’ve always prepared it.

Ingon siya, gi-steam gyud daw niya ug tarong, mao nang sticky siya pero dili latâ. Mao daw na ang proper way of preparing puto maya. Dili kay pareha namo nga basta na lang lutuon sa rice cooker. Hahaha 😅 Medyo kuti siya huna-hunaon kay i-steam pa, pero for me, worth it gyud ang effort.

Honestly, I think LLC’s puto maya is the best puto maya I’ve ever tasted. 😊 Daghan gyud ko’g nahurot ato. 😂 Hangol kaayo ko ug puto maya, especially kung pareha ato ka-lami ang timpla.
