AMA Recap: Creative DEX Ideas, Practical Advice, and Qualcomm Insights

https://preview.redd.it/ypib1r3a3veh1.png?width=818&format=png&auto=webp&s=9e2e838c1fb374fa6557e41e7801c43a588d482f

The AMA with Christopher Ord from Qualcomm turned into a really practical discussion about how organizations are using Nexthink beyond traditional endpoint monitoring. Instead of focusing on product features, most of the conversation was about solving real IT problems at scale, from proactively finding issues before users open tickets to building custom Remote Actions, using Azure Blob Storage and Databricks to work around platform limitations, and even using Nexthink to support Qualcomm's Snapdragon rollout with real employee experience data.

One theme that came up over and over was that DEX is most valuable when you stop thinking about dashboards and start thinking about outcomes. Christopher talked about using employee sentiment alongside technical data, building relationships across IT teams instead of pointing fingers, prioritizing a few high impact use cases instead of trying to monitor everything, and treating Nexthink as a platform for automation and data collection rather than just another monitoring tool. There were also plenty of technical deep dives into Power BI integrations, custom PowerShell Remote Actions, multilingual sentiment campaigns, AI, VDI, and creative ways to move data around the platform, making it a really useful session for both newcomers and experienced Nexthink users. Missed the live session? Read through the AMA and the discussion in the comments. We'll be leaving it pinned so you can come back to it anytime.

Tom welcomes Christopher Ord, Senior Staff IT Engineer at Qualcomm, and Seth White, Co-Founder and CEO of Ellipsys, to explore some of the most creative real-world applications of DEX, from validating Snapdragon laptop deployments and improving AI-powered support with Spark to embedding Nexthink into Qualcomm's day-to-day operating model. What is your role?

There can be a lot of nuance in what people actually do at work. Titles can often be meaningless it what someone's actual job is. Describe your role for the sub? What do you actually do? If you want to have a little fun go ahead and give your role a title that actually fits what you do!

Does anyone actually test their database restores on a schedule?

Every backup thread ends with "an untested backup is not a backup," everyone upvotes, and then (in my experience) nobody has an automated restore test anywhere.

Genuinely curious about the state of practice:

  1. Do you restore-test on a schedule, or only when something breaks / an audit demands it?
  2. If you automated it, what did you build? (ephemeral instance? scripts like pgbackrest_auto? CI job?)
  3. If you didn't, what stopped you? (time? nowhere safe to restore to? nobody asked?)
  4. For those with SOC 2/ISO: did the audit change anything, or did you just produce a doc that says you test quarterly?

Trying to understand if this gap is real or if I just keep landing in teams that are bad at it.

Is anyone actually seeing fewer tickets?

Feels like every company has added another way to get help.

Portal. Chatbot. AI. Knowledge base.

I'm curious if any of it has actually changed things.

Are people fixing more problems on their own now? Or do they still end up opening a ticket after trying a few things first?

A lot of issues seem like they need context more than another article. It's one thing if someone forgot their password. It's another if the problem could be the device, the network, authentication, or something else entirely.

Curious what you all are seeing.

  • Has ticket volume actually gone down?
  • What's worked better than you expected?
  • What hasn't lived up to the hype?
  • Where do you think AI actually helps?

What's the most time-consuming part of your job right now?

Time-consuming doesn't always mean bad, but often its the part of my day that leaves me feeling the most drained. I'd love to hear specifics about your work day.

What's taking up the most time? What is a reoccurring problem?

The more detailed the stories are the better. I want to get to know this community and learn what an actual day in your life looks like. It's Friday, so before you hopefully have a relaxing weekend, takes some time to vent if you need to. :)

Is your company encouraging AI use, locking it down, or somewhere in between?

Everyone seems to be in a different place with AI right now.

Some companies have approved tools, clear guidelines, and encourage employees to use AI where it makes sense. Others have blocked most services entirely. And I know plenty of people who say employees are using AI anyway because it helps them get work done faster.

I'm curious what you're actually seeing.

  • Do you have an official AI policy?
  • Are certain tools approved while others are blocked?
  • Has your company provided any AI training that was actually useful?
  • Are employees clear on what's okay to upload and what's off limits?
  • Do you think most AI-related compliance issues come from people trying to cut corners, or from people who simply don't know the rules?
  • Has your organization changed its approach over the last year?

Feels like the conversation is shifting away from "Should we allow AI?" to "How do we help people use it responsibly without getting in their way?"

Interested to hear what's working (or not working) where you are.

I'm Still Thankful for My Career After 20 Years.

I've been in IT since I was 18 or 19. I'm 38 now. My first job was in the USAF as Cyber Systems Operations (helpdesk, some junior admin type stuff, on prem AD). I did that for 6 years, bounced around a few contract jobs with Microsoft, Boeing, and a SIP telephone company, did some junior network admin and installer work, got a few certs, got into systems, and have been a sysadmin for about 8 years now. I was promoted 3 months ago, so I run the helpdesk and am the highest admin on the team, second only to the IT director.

I feel like I've waded through a bog of shit to get where I am, and I still don't even make all that much compared to some of you folks (125k for the curious).

But I am so thankful that I'm not simply a task rabbit. I don't just show up and do task X, Y, and Z every day. I get to think. I get to provide input on what projects are worth doing and which are a waste of time and money. I can openly speak my mind, and my opinion is well regarded.

I'm just very thankful that my life isn't some punch list of duties that has to be checked off every day. My job is to figure things out and solve complex problems that are confusing and opaque. Some days I have 15 RDP sessions open to a whole host of apps with integrations and interoperability mechanisms, and I just sit there trying to visualize how all the gears turn. Then, at 4 PM or 7 PM, the answer just materializes, and it's exhilarating.

Keep on trucking.

Book Recommendation For IT Professionals or Anyone Thinking a lot about AI

Lately I have been thinking a lot about Isaac Asimov's Foundation. The book itself is incredible, and there is also an apple TV adaptation that is pretty good. It is about an algorithm/equation that is able to predict the fall of a large intergalactic empire. The idea is that because the empire is so large there is enough data to actually make predictions like this. Eventually (the book spans centuries) people begin to worship the equation. These parts of the book are about people that ultimately begin worshiping the AI. It feels very prescient and even though the way I'm describing it might sound very scary there are hopeful moments too- what do humans do when faced with an existential threat to minimize suffering? This is a central question of the books. Anyway just wanted to throw it out there!

How do you handle non-tech users complaining about lack of support?

My boss is pulling me in to chat that apparently some staff have complained to them about not getting support or feeling supported. They feel put off when they are asked to reboot their device which 80% of the time fixes their problems.

My boss will also experience small hiccups that they interpret as IT issues, when a reboot again also solves their problem or they are using something incorrectly and they remember this in their head as "an issue" when they just needed to click through a warning prompt.

We have an MSP to escalate to and had another issue at our office with RDPing to our Sage server in another location over VPN. We recently had the internet upgraded and hope it would resolve the RDP disconnects, but one user still expierences them from time to time. Our MSP essentially said "minor drops in the tunnel can cause these things to disconnect sometimes" and left it at that.

I'm going to have a chat with my boss about supporting people better and maybe there is more I can do, but I feel like part of the problem is that non-tech people are misunderstanding the nature of their issues and falsely reporting problems with IT through their own misunderstanding.. I'm by no means an IT wizard, I've only been in IT for 5 years, but there is no one else remotely technical at our company and I feel like it's causing this misunderstanding that is leaving me frustrated and blamed for people not understanding IT and why I reccommend that people simply reboot so often.
