Canadian Tire on Hunt Club and "bag checks"

I bought some light bulbs at Canadian Tire today. After I'd paid, the cashier asked to look in my backpack.  I said no and left.

She called the manager who ran after me and told me it was "store policy."  I said I didn't care.  He said all we want is a quick look in your backpack, and I said "I refuse."

At that point, he realized I knew my rights and told me "Then next time, don't bring the backpack in." (Possibly the manager realized I was retired and had time to kill if they wanted to escalate this. 🙂 He may also have realized that I hadn't stolen anything and they'd be left with egg on their face if they pushed it.)

I understand the need to prevent shoplifting, but either (1) make people place their bags in a locker or some other secure place before they enter the store, or (2) have probable cause before you ask to search someone instead of trying to blanket search everyone.

It was an unpleasant encounter, and maybe that store will view me with suspicion in future, but dammit, if we don't stand up for our rights, we'll lose them.

Power's out... Let's put all outages on this thread

Power's out as of 10:30pm at my place in Centrepointe. Whole street looks out, but apartments at Baseline and Centrepointe still have lights.

Crazy wild stormy weather though!

Edit 22:54: https://outages.hydroottawa.com/ seems to be catching up to all the reports.

I love how easy it is to build cool things on Linux

I have a couple of Raspberry Pi machines running motion: One for a security camera at the front of the house and one at the back.

I whipped up a little GUI in Tcl/Tk to monitor the webcams; took all of a couple of hours. The GUI fetches an image every 8 seconds. But if motion is detected, then a message on a special IRC channel makes the GUI fetch images as quickly as possible so I can see the motion in real-time. Once motion is over, it goes back to once every 8 seconds.

I just love that we have an environment that lets me whip up stuff like this so effortlessly.

Crabs! The Musical at the Ottawa Fringe Festival

There's a brand new original musical at the Ottawa Fringe Festival called "Crabs! The Musical". The show is about the adventures of three giant mutant crabs as they make their way through the human world. It's very funny and the songs are incredibly catchy. For showtimes and more info, see the Fringe website.
