Thank you, Ottawa Charge for an amazing ride!

It was a season for the books. In the off-season, we lost some talent and many were more than a little worried when the first puck dropped last November. The early couple of months had a few nail-biters and Ottawa found themselves behind the pack. They never gave up and even won their last four games straight and it took the last game of the season for the Charge to eke into the playoffs. We all knew they were better than their record. Heck, even the Victoire chose to not play Ottawa in that first round. They knew it too.

We saw some amazing individual performances along the way: Jenner, Leslie, Hughes, Kadirova, Woz, Savolainen, Larocque, Markowski, Clark. And Philips. Especially Philips - at only 25, she has a bright future ahead for her (and for us!). We had a lot of bright sparks but it's how these pros played as a team that really impressed. I really thought they gelled over the course of the season, rallying behind coach Carla, finding ways to win in a sometimes-gruelling schedule, and just competing hard game in and game out. Oh yeah, and there were the Olympic games in their too.

The team gave us a lot to cheer for over the last five months or so. Yeah, last night wasn't our night but let's acknowledge the Victoire and congratulate their stars for bringing the Walter Cup to Canada for the first time. I'd rather have seen Jenner, Leslie, and Philips hoist the Cup but it sure was nice to see Poulin as a champion. I want that for us next year.

Soon, we will head into the uncertainty of the expansion draft, unsure of what lies ahead of us. But let's all pause while this team is how it is in the moment and thank this Ottawa Charge team for all they accomplished this year.

Bravo!

Whats a good place to buy a starter bike?

My partner is an adult who has never learned to ride a bike, but is interested. I used to ride as well but haven't since i was a teenager. What are some good options for buying affordable bikes to ride around our neighborhood, and what traits should we be looking for in those bikes?

Garbage collectors constantly leaving one bin - reasons?

So my two garbage cans are smaller than the allowable size, very obviously round receptacles with the garbage always in bags, and never overflowing. No lids. There's also no obvious recycling stuff. But for whatever reason, three or four times since the winter the garbage collectors will take one can and empty it, but leave the other.

No yellow notice has ever been left to explain what I'm doing wrong. Yesterday I finally called by-law and they sent them back to take it, which was done without a problem. I'm just wondering if anyone here has had a similar problem and knows what I'm obviously doing wrong so that they don't take both cans? It's just weird to me.

10 fires in Ottawa so far this year linked to lithium-ion batteries. 54 such fires since 2024.

"There have been 54 fires linked to lithium-ion batteries since Jan. 1, 2024. There were 19 fires in 2024, 25 in 2025, and 10 so far this year."

"Ottawa Fire Services mentioned several factors including leaving devices plugged in long after they’re charged, charging them on soft surfaces such as beds or couches, or in extremely cold places, such as unheated garages. Low-quality, aging, or damaged batteries also pose risks, as does leaving batteries near flammable materials."

Big Orange Truck at Blossom Park Tim Hortons

I see this truck parked at the Tim Hortons for hours every day with an older woman and man in it or they're sitting in the restaurant. The truck says "Guts and Glory" on it.

The other day I was approached by the man to give me some kind of liturature, to which I politely refused.

The man looked furious for my refusal. I could tell he was doing his best to contain his frustration but I think if he had insisted and I refused again he would have caused some kind of scene.

I understand he is doing something about veterans and I have veteran plates, and when I refused I did thank him for their support but the entire encounter left me feeling really uncomfortable. Is there any info on what exactly this couple does? I see them sometimes with an orange trailer that has a whole bunch of other writing about rememberance on it...

Bol-Dan reviews - waterproofing

Has anyone used Bol-Dan for foundation waterproofing before? They are the most attractive of the four quotes I’ve received but I want to make sure it’s not attractive for the wrong reasons.

Yes I know questions about foundation companies get asked all the time, yes I have reviewed all the reviews. Someone once mentioned Bol-Dan but I haven’t seen anything else. Just hoping to hear any other experiences, thanks :)

Update: Need an awesome hairstylist for a makeover - east end

I recently asked for recommendations for a hair dresser in the east end. I was embarrassed about the state of my hair and have social anxiety, so I just kept avoiding it. https://www.reddit.com/r/ottawa/s/TO2IaP6Thp

Two people recommended Michele at Trilogy Hair Lounge in Orleans. It was a great experience. She met with me before my cut to discuss what I was looking for and she made recommendations based on my comfort zone and maintenance level.

I now have long layers and will be getting highlights next. I can’t recommend the salon and Michele enough. Posting an update to say thank you and for anyone searching for a hair salon in the east end.

Garlicky chili crisp recommendations? (That aren't Lo Gan Ma or Holy Fuck)

Edit: Oh lordy, I'm sorry. I can't edit the title of the post. At this point in time, my goddamn autocorrect is now changing "duck" to "fuck". I'm not trying to be crass here, sorry y'all.

Hi all,

I'm wondering what your favorite chili oil or garlic chili crisp recommendations are?

I love Holy Duck (sold at Moo Shu), but it's a bit out of my price range for the moment. I'm not a big fan of Lo Gan Ma.

I'm about to head up north for the summer, so I'm looking for something good to stock up on that goes well with fish and isn't too pricy.

Any ideas? Suggestions? I haven't been grocery shopping much lately, so I don't even know what Superstore has for chili crisps these days and I'm kind of trying to avoid running all over town to compare Kowloon with T&T, etc.

Help me out!

Yuki Tsunoda spotted at College Square 😭

College Square wasn’t on my F1 2026 bingo card but apparently Yuki Tsunoda was out here doing reconnaissance laps around the Loblaws parking lot XD 🏎️
Probably wanted to get some Summerhays too lol

EDIT:
Didn’t expect this to turn into an F1 thread, but I’ve got a WhatsApp group going for F1 fans in the city if anyone wants to join and chat races, news, and general chaos.

We’re around 42 members now and planning a watch party for the Montreal GP at Pantheon Garage.

DM me if you want the link to join.

Are there any feminist-aligned men's organizations in Ottawa?

Title. There is an epidemic of misogyny among young men and a general anti-feminist backlash right now. Some of the convoy adjacent far right protesters hanging around Ottawa since the pandemic embody this kind of politics, so it is not a 'somewhere else' problem. I'd like to be part of the solution but I don't want to reinvent the wheel if people are already doing good work.

Please don't recommend spaces for queer and trans people in Ottawa like Kind Space, these are very important spaces doing vital work, but I'm much less worried about queer and trans kids becoming raging misogynists.

Edit: unsurprisingly, the comments have become an advertisment for why I asked in the first place :( Thanks to everyone who gave useful information, though.

Mayoral Candidate Alex Lawson used his company to support convoy, illegally aid conservative politicians

To recap, Mayoral candidate Alex Lawson supports the convoy, endorsed calls for the convoy to bring a revolution to Ottawa, and has suggested he will “burn down” city hall if he doesn’t get his way.

Fitting into this pattern, he has used his company, Capital Framers, to illegally try to get donations for conservative politicians. Attached are pictures of him using the company to drive donations to politicians or attract people to events. I’m told that promoting events like this counts as an illegal in-kind contribution from a corporation. Lawson is a moron so he probably doesn’t even know this, but it proves that if this guy somehow does become Mayor, he really won’t care about limits on his power and will probably keep trying to break the law. Scary to think about considering the “strong mayor” powers Doug Ford gave mayors.

His company was also used to benefit the convoy. He apparently delivered portapotties to the occupiers with the help of at least one employee (this was pointed out by a redditor and a conservative actually sent a DM saying it was true). While I don’t have a smoking gun on that yet, (he locked his Instagram and deleted a bunch of other social media content) attached are a few pictures which, while hard to make out, appear to be Lawson working on a roof for a convoy occupier building in confederation park…. This was from Canadian Press. There are more pictures from the day that appear to show him. Here’s a news story; some of the journalists with tweets in that story have videos that appear to show him.

So, before running for Mayor, he was using his company to break the law to advance partisan conservative causes. He wants a revolution and wants to burn it all down if he can’t get his way. He was willing to not just join the convoy protesters but to openly work to support their occupation, including with his company. He’s already polling close to 15% and, if he keeps gaining and if there’s a messy vote split, he could become Mayor. His campaign launch is on Saturday and I’m worried that our corporate media might be lining up to actually support him, given that they are refusing to hold him accountable for any of this.

Thanks to people for sending me things and the nice messages of support. I’ll keep posting updates as I get them.

Compost bin 3D print?

Does anyone have a design for the clasp that goes over the green bin? The collectors tossed and broke mine.

I understand I can order a whole new bin from the city but it seems a bit of a waste if I can fix it myself.

Clean up at Bayview

Ariel Troster

· A few more answers re: the cleanup near Bayview station …

  1. City staff confirmed that no one was actively staying there when they did the clean up.
  2. No viable trees were cut down, the city’s forestry department was on site. It was only dead trees and brush cut back.
  3. Clean up is ongoing.
  4. As mentioned on Friday, 9 tonnes of garbage was removed, including 26 propane tanks and 2,000 needles
  5. Social services had been on site in the lead-up, to help people find better and safer places to stay.
  6. The mess was so hazardous that staff had to use machines to clear the site.
