Smoke from cooking goes around Island Hood Vent. Any solutions or ideas?

Like it says, when we cook, smoke from cooking seams to go up and around our new hood vent instead of outside. Is this common? any solutions?

We very recently had a hood vent installed over our gas range in our island. It’s a 30” range and the hood is 36” wide, 30“ above the cook top.

Its rated at 900 cfm, and uses a 6” duct that runs outside, with 1 90 degree turn on the 12’ of total ducting.

When it runs I see the flaps open on the outside exhaust.

If I put a piece of paper directly against the fan is gets pulled against it and suctions agains the fan.

I don’t know what to do. We installed this to help with smoke and kitchen odor but it isn’t helping at all.

Any ideas or suggestions would be great
