Im curious how many woman are on this forum???

I’ve tried to get 3 different women in my life to read this series but none of them made it past the first novel. And only one of the three actually finished the first one. Strangely enough all of them said basically the same thing. “It’s just not a woman’s kind of book” I’m curious to get the perspective of a woman who has read this series. Did you find anything about these books that would cause a female reader to feel that way??

Is sex overly exaggerated in books?

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but I just can’t shake off the feeling that sex just isn’t that great. In these books it is mostly portrayed as something amazing and wonderful for the woman but my wife, apparently, never had an amazing experience like that. I usually don’t last that long, I am confused what they mean when they say he hit “the spot” and foreplay scares me more than domestic chores. I am unsure if it is just me and if I have shitty self-esteem or if there really is no such thing as amazing sex for the woman. So, what do you think?

uj/ Hi folks here is the first step in having better sex: communication.

I’m convinced Baldur’s Gate 3 doesn’t receive more mainstream praise because it’s a video game.

This is a masterpiece, why is it not receiving more credit? The flashbacks are amazing, I was truly invested and I'm someone who is hard to please. The politics and world building are also very interesting and all options are fascinating protagonist. The love stories are each unique and heartbreaking.

People say it glorifies murder when it's the exact opposite, it portrays murder as completely horrible and dehumanising. Meanwhile asoiaf arguably glorifies torture (book 5 Theon is not even 15 years imprisoned and very reekilized) yet it receives wide recognition and praise. The Hitman series has a literal serial killer as a protagonist, yet IO interactive got a film adaptation in 2007 a whole decade before Hollywood was adapting every hit game series. No shade against these books/games but the double standards are outstanding.

^(And yes I know it won game of the year and was generally the talk of the entire sub genre and much of the larger gaming genre for the better part of six months but I am talking about main stream attention.)

A Romantasy for Guys and Men, Chapter 7: The Crime Scene

ARFGAM Chapter 7

Not caught up? See links.

Chapter 7: The Crime Scene

Chad stood in the town square next to Xadan, Rhysand, and Clairmont with an unfamiliar and unpleasant sensation in his lower abdomen. Every man from West Harkness had been summoned shortly after sunrise to look at the remains if Michelle and discuss what was to be done about it.

The scene at the Butcher's storage room was more horrifying than anything Chad had ever imagined. Weaker men from town have heaved and slimed their breakfasts all over the snow upon witnessing the carnage. Even our mighty Chad could not help but grunt, "that's disgusting" when it was his turn to view the sickening scene of Michelle's mutilated corpse hanging from the point of the meat hook, blood and guts scattered around the barn.

Before Chad and his brothers arrived the prevailing consensus amongst the men of West Harkness was a demon, monster, or other horror from the Bellows was to blame. Such a monster had not plagued West Harkness for over a generation but folktales of the dangers from the haunted forest were a part of all of their childhoods.

The monster had left no tracks in the snow, this did not surprise Chad because he knew Des could fly. What Chad did not understand was how Stelmaria was taken by her without him noticing. When he awoke and saw she was missing he had assumed she was out hunting or exploring the town while invisible. When he walked into the Butcher's storage room he convinced himself of a different conclusion of what had happened with peerless masculine ignorance.

The only remaining debate amongst the gathered men was if they should pool town resources to pay the Baron's Master Mage to cast a protective ward over the town or if a town patrol would be strong enough to kill the creature if it returned. Chad had reason to believe neither plan would succeed. Despoina's illusion would allow her to remain undetected from any sort of patrol and if Stelmaria was unable to stand up to her power then a human mage's wards would not stop her. They needed him, and he needed the Seelie. It was time to be the hero.

"Here me friends, brothers, and neighbors for I have braved the Bellows my whole life," Chad increased the volume of his voice with each word so until his voice drowned out the person who had been speaking. "It is true there are monsters from the Bellows but there are also friendly creatures with equal power, power greater than the Baron's master mage. I know because I have meant both in my most recent hunt."

The assembly had variable expressions about what Chad was saying but he was too caught up in how badass he thought he was sounding to notice. He continued, "I will travel into the Bellows and find the friendly folk known as seelie fae and get them to aid me in tracking and slaying the monster."

As Chad spoke the anxiety and heartache he had been feeling was rapidly replaced by impudent determination and vanity. The blood in his veins pulsed with adrenaline and visions of the statues to be erected in his honor filled his head. Soon he would be a legend, the human man that led a band of Seelie to hunt down an evil fae and revenge the death of his beloved. He would mourn Stelmaria later, plus there were probably other sexy Seelie for him to meet in the ethereal side of reality and being called 'cute-bean' was starting to get on his nerves anyway.

"I will return in no less than a week. In the meantime nobody should venture outside after dark. Keep all doors locked and do not trust any strangers. Many of the demons from the Bellows have the same weaknesses as vampires from our folklore," Chad figured this was probably true since Stelmaria had called Des a vampire and said she was allergic to sun/star light. He tried to remember what else he had heard about vampires in stories when he was younger. "They are afraid of silver and hate the smell of onions."

Without bothering to provide any additional context to his three brothers, Chad started back towards his home to gather his supplies for his honorable mission. As he strolled away from the group it occurred to him that it was garlic, not onions, that vampires had been afraid of in his childhood stories. He shrugged and figured it would be fine. They are more or less the same thing.

Whether or not the other men of West Harkness believed anything Chad had just said would never cross Chad's mind. It was not in his nature to wonder what they were doing once he had made up his mind. Since Chad is the hero of this story we will also not concern ourselves with these details.

Stelmaria had not felt the sense of satisfaction and freedom she felt as she trotted away from West Harkness that morning in eons. When she first slipped out to kill Michelle she had been planning on taking Chad with her. The thrill of the hunt and reminder of just how tasty human fear was changed her mind. Sure the love, lust, and admiration she had been feeding on from Chad was nice but they were third rate compared to the fear and suffering that Michelle had given her. She owed her escape to Chad and a part of her had really liked him, or at least the ease of manipulating him. So she had decided to leave after her feast without him, lest she be tempted to do the same to him some day. West Harkness was small and she could smell bigger towns and cities of humans to the southeast. Her new life was about to begin.

(To be Continued - Probably)

Help me find a book

I know I had it when I took the kid to the park and I’m fairly certain I had it later at home. It’s not on my night stand, not in the living room, not in the kitchen, and not in the computer room. The book is called {You Can’t Spell Treason without Tea by Rebecca Thorne}. Has anyone seen it or have any suggestions where else to look?

Any help is appreciated thanks in advance!

^(I use Steam to refer to the tension, yearning, and build up to the Spice i.e. sexual romance)

Behold Her is a high spice contemporary monster romance set in the fictional town of Moonvale. It shares the same world and some characters as some of Emily Antoninette’s other monster romances (most notably Maneater and Afterglow) but can be read as a stand alone. The story is dual point of view and written in the first person. Our romance is between a human woman named Mona and a half witch half succubus man named Max.

Max moves to Moonvale ostensibly to start his own branch of his family’s paranormal private investigation business, but is also looking to reset after a recent heartbreak. While staking out a strange man’s apartment for a client, Max cannot help but catch a glimpse of the beautiful woman living in the apartment above. Her beauty is so encapsulating that she begins to haunt his dreams.

Mona has a good job and good friends (that only flake on game night sometimes) so why is she so unhappy? Trying to her best to not continue to spiral she decides to take a burlesquing dance class which breathes a little energy into her. Maybe it will help end the her perverted dreams that seem to be haunted by a beautiful stalker?

Behold Her is a bit darker than the other two books I have read by Emily Antoinette but I would still classify it as a romcom. The plot is a little slow for my taste and but the spice is variable enough that the abundant intimate scenes did not overstay their welcome. It is first and foremost a story about two people falling in love and having great sex so if you’re looking for novel magic systems and world ending stakes you should look elsewhere.

What is done really well here is the depiction of working through depression and personal insecurities about who you are inside and outside. I will especially give kudos to the way Max struggled with his identity as a half-succubus half-witch. As a mixed race individual I thought this captured some of my struggles with identity well (hats off to Emily Antoinette).

What I liked about this book

  • Role Playing dub/con instead of literal dub con. There is also explicit dreams that are fully narrative especially early on - a favorite trope of mine.
  • Side Characters for you to love. It’s rare read a romcom with ‘other couple as side characters’ that leaves me wanting to read the side characters story but Afterglow has a place near the top of my TBR.
  • Shane is the best dad. Loved him as MMC in Maneater and love his as MMCs dad here. Although the scenes with Elle and Shane as parents left me wanting more Maneater.

What I did not like about this book

  • One of the characters is a PI but there is not a lot of mystery solving going on. I love PI fiction so this is probably more of an RBD issue than a broader knock against the book. Alas, it is not trying to be a detective mystery, it is good at what it is trying to be.
  • Romantic dialogue felt a little repetitive by the end.
  • Although the scenes with Elle and Shane as parents were fun, they left me wanting more Maneater (my biggest complaint with Maneater was there was not more of it).

Spoilers Review

Was there a Bad Dad?:
>!0️⃣ (no) there was the best dad.!<

>!At this point I think I just have to accept that Emily Antoinette writes the kind of spice I like. Everything by her I have read the spice has done it for me.!<

What I liked Spoilers

  • >!Max’s sister Samantha having the hots for Mona and jokingly flirting with her. 11/10 sibling razzing.!<
  • >!Your new witch partner making your recently deceased pets lingering spirit semi-corporeal is objectively cute and the exact kind of thing this genre needs more of.!<
  • Major spoilers >!The MMC is the one who ends up tied up in the bad guys closet and the FMC is the one that comes to the rescue.!<

What I didn't like Spoilers

  • >!Lots of D&D references but no on page D&D…If I could have one favor from a good fairy I would wish for all Romcoms to have the story within a story structure of {Roll for Romance by Lenora Woods}...!<
  • >!Maybe my patience for the traditional romance story structure has waned some because the third act break-up felt like more of a chore than normal to power through. The action part of the climax could have been nearly unchanged without forcing a misunderstanding between the characters.!<

This Book Reminded Me of:

  • {Maneater by Emily Antoinette}, (Unsurprisingly)
  • {Knot My Type by Evie Mitchell}, for portrayal of MMC emotions
  • (Strangely) A cozy rom com gender flip of the spice in {Deliver by Pam Godwin} - but I would not say liking one is likely to transfer into liking the other

Who should read this book?

Fans of high spice lower stake romcoms, especially if role playing dubcom is a trope you’re interested in.

If this sounds like a book for you the ebook is available on KU, the audiobook is available on my hoopla (at least for my library), you can find other ways to get the book on the author’s website

I’m opinionated, if you can’t handle strong opinions, 🚫 comments or ⬇️ votes (keep scrolling).

I like spoilers. Because I like spoilers, I want my book recommendations to have spoilers. If your recommendation does not have the kind of spoilers I look for in recommendations expect a ⬇️ vote.

I only one to read ONE sort of of book which is romance Also r/rcj is the only place I’m willing to look for recommendations so you better have your best recs ready or I’ll never reach 14,845 books shelved on goodreads.

Things I need in my romance books in order for me to finish™️ and give ✅.

  1. Cuckolding. Cuckholding is the ultimate romantic act that can be done. If she’s not fucking at least three other guys were they even in love? If the hero cannot eat another guys slop and sloop out of her watery bowels that’s ❌ a hero that brings the swoon. I want my hero so obsessed with the heroine but also so progressive and communist that he doesn’t want to LOOK at another man that his love is even mildly attracted too unless that other man is sticking his dick in her.
  2. A hero whose prostate has been touched by another person. If the hero’s back door has been broken in by anyone other than the heroine, I’m out. And I don’t give a fuck who doesn’t like that. There’s a special & unique bond that comes from having your first prostate orgasm, an irreplaceable connection and if it wasn’t from getting pegged by the heroine’s wearing her favorite bad dragon in her harness, my skin crawls. And no, I don’t care if you don’t like that. I’m reading romance for MY, enjoyment, not yours.
  3. Condom use. Love it. There should always be a physical barrier between my hero and heroine. Heroine should tease that maybe some day he will get to feel all of her but if it happens before final book in series epilogue that’s a DNF for me physically, mentally, emotionally.

Thanks in advance for recommendations!

“Smut” seems to be increasingly synonymous with “any sloopy content” for a large number of readers these days. How do you define “smut?”

It was fairly understood when I was a kid (I'm over 40 now) that "smut" was pornographic romance novels. But in the many books threads I follow, I've seen more and more readers decrying books as smut even if there's a mention of nudity or a single sexual scene. I'm wondering if the meaning is being shifted, which words do now and then, or if I'm just running into people who didn't know the older definition. I think there should be a big separation between "sloopy content" and "smut."

I define smut the old way. It's porn. And I think it's very odd to call something smut because there's a genital mentioned in there. And there are a ton of fantastic books out there that newer readers might miss just because some character fucks and the book is thrown out for a half of a page worth of content.

Though I guess I shouldn't be surprised with how intimacy-averse young folks are becoming to sexual content in all other media. Just doesn't feel healthy.

Define smut. Where's your line?

0/5 👎👎👎👎👎 I liked the book but where was my shampoo and conditioner identity representation?

(Spoilers for The Road to Bones?)

Wow wow wow. Finally a book where the ‘ethnic ambiguity’ was thrown out the door and there is finally a >!MMC that has my hair type so I can self insert like the good little sloopy I want so desperately to be!<. Now of course this was the first book in a series so I accepted that >!FMC was going to pine after and fuck Chris Hemsworth dude for the first 90% of the book.!< But since I am a cis-man and therefore naturally highly intelligent and wise and smart and literate me knew that >!blonde was going to disrespect and betray the little princess and that tall dark and handsome would be shadow daddy.!<

Well then this was all great and the book was a fun engaging read but so much talk of hair throughout the whole thing then why did the >!major POC character with my hair type not have 5-7 chapters dedicated to talking about how he takes care of his hair? What does the author think that those gorgeous curls texture themself? Was this warrior not putting in leave in conditioner but still turning ladies heads?!<

Honestly it completely broke the world building and took away all immersion I could have in the story. Next time I hope the MMC is written >!white medetranian with black hair!< >!ethnically ambiguous per the normal of the genre instead of getting my self insert hopes up before crumbling before my eyes.!<

uj/ good book 4/5 (rj/👎uj/) would recommend. {The Road of Bones by Demi Winters}.

Bonus Audiobook Narration by Nikki Grey and Sean Masters
🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊 (5/5)

^(1 I use Steam to refer to the tension, yearning, and build up to the Spice i.e. sexual romance.)

{Viciously Yours by Jamie Applegate Hunter} is a 258pg fae fated-mates romance novel that I would bot call PWP^(2) but is light on any plot beyond the romance between the protagonists. The FMC^(2) is an orphan named Amelia from the Human Kingdom. The MMC^(2), Rennick, is the heir to the throne of the Fae Mountain Kingdom. The story is written in the third person and provides dual perspective.

If you’re looking for world building on par with The Book Genesis or lore to match The Iliad this is probably not the book for you. The setting and world building are merely tools in crafting an interesting love story^(3). The first 25% of the story follows Amelia and Rennick during a time when Rennick knows that Amelia is his fated mate but because she is human the Queen of the Human Kingdom and his father agree that her identity must be kept a secret and that she cannot be told she is destined to be queen of a fae kingdom until they are twenty-five and he has reached his full powers as a fae. He is allowed to write her letters telling her she’s his mate, but he must do so under an alias. The story time skips months to years ant a time covering key moments in their adolescence and early adulthood as well as many of the love letters he writes her. Amelia has no way to write back to him during this time.

I have been in a reading slump lately. I have been looking for some bridge books after finishing Song of Susannah (Stephen King’s Dark Tower VI), I enjoyed the first 78 percent of {A Deal with the Bossy Devil by Kyra Parsi} got busy for a week and now the last 22% feels like it’s on my TDL not my TBR, I am halfway through two-thousand leagues but think it needs the Count of Monte Cristo strategy^(4). I want to read an epic fantasy romance but have not been in the mood for one when I have time to read. Viciously Yours is not amazing, it may not even be great, but it is exactly the book I needed to get out of my reading slump.

^(2 PWP=‘Plot? What Plot?’ or ‘Porn without Plot’ depending on who you ask; FMC/MMC = Female/Male Main Character.)
^(3 Four Fae kingdoms surround the Human Kingdom, there is a barrier between the Fae kingdoms and the human border that can be crossed with a permit - unless you are fae royalty that is under twenty-five years of age. Fae royalty have fated mates that are born on the same day as them. On their thirteenth birthday the gods whisper the name of their fated mate in there ears. Usually royals then find their fated mate and have them moved to their Kingdoms so they can be under the royal family's protection as their are rebels who want to kill the fated mates to weaken the royal bloodlines. Sound contrived and something that should be criticized? Well this is not the review you're looking for because I did not mind. The world building is not was not trying to be unique nor interesting. The love story was trying to be unique and interesting and the world building served it. I do have one complaint though and it is the decision to provide a lore dump and outline in bulleted lists at the front of the novel. I assume this is mostly done as some kind of KU gamification due to the way KU pays authors but it is unnecessary and then all that information is reestablished in the first three chapters via dialogue. I understand 'telling and not showing' when your lore's only purpose is to establish the premise of your love story but 'telling twice and not showing' is a step too far.)
^(4 I read an unabridged translation earlier this year but took 3-6 week breaks every ~300-400 pages)

What I liked about this book

  • Seeing the MCs as teens and watching them mature.
  • The MCs teasing and flirting was fun and quality tension and yearning was maintained past their first time.
  • I thought both narrators captured the characters perfectly. Dual narration can be pretty hit or miss. Starting with reading then switching mediums can be fraught if the voices do not vibe with how you had been imagining them. Neither of these were a problem for me this time.

What I did not like about this book

  • Jealousy is used as major characterization of Amelia and Rennick’s love and it does not work for me at all. I don’t think jealousy of ‘other guy/gal’ is not a prerequisite for possessiveness and that aspect of their love would have been just as clear without it.
  • The lore/world building is oddly laid out in bulleted lists at the beginning of the book. Why?

This Book Reminded Me of:

  • {Sunshine’s Grump by Merri Bright}, for being a fun and flirty comfort read that brought fresh take to its sub genre & tropes.
  • {Unexpectedly Bookish by Elise Kennedy}, specifically the letters remind me of the anonymous discord chatting between the MCs in that book.

Who should read this book?

Not everybody. You have to like and be in the mood for a book that is not going to be much more than two people being in love with and lusting after each other. It’s a really really good book for that mood.
