🧩 Solve Daily Nutmeg's Puzzles to Win $50 to Your Favorite New Haven Restaurant

🧩 Solve Daily Nutmeg's Puzzles to Win $50 to Your Favorite New Haven Restaurant

Longtime host Pat Sajak retired a couple of years ago, but Wheel of Fortune’s brainy yet accessible game show format lives on.

In tribute, we’ve generated six New Haven-centric word puzzles, styled after WoF’s bonus round, for you to solve.

Like contestants on the show, you’ll get the letters R, S, T, L, N and E (plus Z, because... you’ll see) filled in by default. Unlike on the show, you won’t get to choose three more consonants and a vowel. You will however get more time to solve and, just as crucially, more specific categories/hints to go with the overarching New Haven theme.

As Sajak did so many nights, we’ve got prizes to hand out: three $50 gift cards to local restaurants of the winners’ choosing. Much as we do with our riddle giveaways, the winners, in turn, will be chosen at random from the pool of readers who submit their answers via this form by next Wednesday, May 20, at 6 p.m., with one entry awarded for each correct answer.

Correctly answering all six puzzles will get you six drawing entries, but if you get just one answer right, you’ll still be in the running to win a gift card. (In fact, even if you solve zero answers, you’ll receive an entry. Call it an A for effort.)

To borrow from what is now successor host Ryan Seacrest’s signature bonus round tee-up: You have more than 10 seconds. Talk it out. Good luck.

Remember, submit your answers here by next Wednesday, May 20, at 6 p.m. for a chance to win!

P.S. Please don't post the answers in the thread. Give everyone a shot to figure it out!

🌳 🪦 Grove Street Cemetery is New Haven's Hidden Downtown Arboretum

The graves of loved ones and luminaries are enough to attract visitors to Grove Street Cemetery. But this 18-acre oasis in the middle of the city has long held another appeal: its trees. The cemetery now carries the official designation of a Level I Accredited Arboretum, and a self-guided tour brochure will help you find 40 species of trees, both familiar and foreign, that shade the cemetery’s wide paths and hidden nooks.

When the Beach Boys played, there was “no point in sitting down, except perhaps to keep from fainting,” recalls Sarah Heath of Hamden. Her friend Michael Ross, who grew up in North Haven, witnessed many a bloody hockey game when the New Haven Blades took the ice. There were swing bands and circus acts, boxing matches and rodeos, antique car shows and the Ice Capades.

It all happened at the New Haven Arena.

The secret of the legend of the Fountain of Youth may be that almost any fountain qualifies.

Their ornament and motion can flow straight into our eyes, their gurgling and splashing right into our ears, their aerated perfume up into our noses, cutting a path through the tangled jungles of our brains to some old forgotten place where youthful delight still springs.

Here are nearly a dozen local fountains to discover, no machete required.
