Hi all! I'm moving to New Haven to go to Yale's medical school. Beyond cost, my main priority is being as close of a walk to the medical school/hospital as possible. I know the Hill has a rough reputation but I'm poor and the rents are much cheaper than downtown, which is the other closest area to the medical school.
Are there any areas of the Hill besides right next to the hospital that are decent? The part of the Hill right next to the hospital (i.e. both north of Columbus and east of Howard) also seems to have higher rents.
Somebody told me the southwest part of the Hill is especially rough, so I'm probably excluding that. Are the parts I circled okay, or if it's block-by-block, are there parts within them that are okay? Which parts within the circles are definitely to be avoided?
Thanks for any help :- )
I’m visiting and would love to have the famous new haven pizza. Does anyone have any recommendation? Should I go with barstools rec? Looking forward to everyone’s suggestions thank you!
It almost feels like I’m in a Twilight Zone episode sometimes. Everyone around me just seems totally unbothered and unaffected by awful smelling air. It comes in waves. It just started again just now with the rain but it was also there on Sunday which was a very sunny day. I did some reading and have found older posts referencing this type of thing and some news articles so I know I’m not the only one but it just seems insane to me that the city allows this. It gives me physical symptoms when it’s bad. It’s not just the smell that bothers me.
Any ideas on how exactly this happened?

Rent is getting crazy. Do you think your place is worth the money?
are there any good vintage stores for clothing in or near new haven?
Anybody know what's going on at 50 Fitch street? Everyday around 12:30 a bunch of guys pull up in Teslas and cheer/chant in the parking lot, and then leave. Recently they've been driving around on segways/hoverboards. I see/hear it every day from my office and my curiosity is killing me. Not complaining at all, just genuinely wondering what it is! TIA

Ok - not much to this post but my house just shook. Northen New Haven area upper Whalley/Amity Stop&Shop area…. Anyone else?
Hey everyone. Just to clarify, I am under no illusion that this will work out but nothing ventured, nothing gained. I work around the Whitney Ave area and I'm looking for parking. I have a decent spot already that's a 15 minute walk which is good but could always be better. My co-worker scoped out the lot behind 110 Whitney Ave. Now there's no signage in the parking lot whatsoever but these are also law offices so again I'm very much assuming it's private but I'd like some assurance that it is. Anyone know anything about this lot?

How do I get a new one? The city doesn’t answer phone. Thx!
Just wanted to share my experience in case anyone is apartment hunting in New Haven.
I reached out about a unit through Farnam Realty and initially discussed an offer below asking. Within about 5 minutes, I called back and stated we were ready to move forward at full asking price after my previous offer was denied. I have call logs showing multiple conversations throughout the day.
Later, I was told the company accepted another tenant because apparently my full-price offer was never communicated in time due to internal communication issues between agents. Then instead of a professional apology, I received this response from management:
“In life there will always be dissapointments- but thankfully enough- New Haven is a city wth a plethoral of apartments and there are always other options.
59 Clark would be a good option also.
And the moral of the story is - first come first served- that is the real estate business.
Have a great night.”

The issue isn’t that someone else got the apartment. That happens. The issue is poor communication, disorganization between agents, and the dismissive attitude afterward.
Just something to keep in mind if you’re considering working with them.

Hey Reddit,
This world we live in is an evil place, everything is falling apart and getting worse. I wanna do some good and my first thought was to volunteer. Where in this area are the best places to reach out to? I’m also happily looking for other suggestions. Local politics, youth groups, etc.
I’m looking for recommendations for any HVAC service/repair in the New Haven area. I have a central air unit that I would like to get serviced/repaired. I’ll greatly appreciate it!
I love the idea of long wharf food truck stalls. I think it’s great that there is a place that provides stable business to the food trucks and that people have access to a pretty nice waterfront park with nearby wetlands.
I think that the reality of long wharf food trucks does not match the theory.
What should have been a nice public area has become inundated with groups that do not respect the space and abandoned by city authorities. The environmental impact alone should be enough. I know that there are plans to revitalize the area, but I don’t know if the local environment can afford to wait.
Moving from Stamford to New Haven this summer. Any recommendations for plastic moving box rentals based in southern CT? We previously rented from a UHaul in the Bronx but are hoping to avoid the drive to NY
