Is Lords of the Maelstrom a good set?

I've picked up the Combat Patrol and wandering if The Lords of the Maelstrom would be a good addition?

Also I know nothing about them so is there any good books to read?

Just picked up the combat patrol and I have no idea what I'm doing.

As the heading really. Last time I played Warhammer was late 90's and that was 3rd edition Fantasy Battle. I've bought some Necron Warriors over a year ago but painting a unit of 10 was mind numbingly boring.

Today I went to my local gaming store and just explained my situation. Because my friends play space marines, Sister's of battle and my granddaughter has picked Adepta Soritas, which I think is the same as Sister's of Battle?

There were two staff in the store and the owner showed me the selection. As my friends and family are playing primarily good guys, I had already decided that I was going bad guys. When he mentioned the Red Corsairs, there was a shout from his assistant "Space Pirates" and I was sold.

So, I'll build and paint these and then I'll sit in my "Nerd Room," as my wife calls it, and this is the question. Ive got the combat patrol box so what next? Ive never played before and my painting skills aren't the best especially since I've an essential tremor in my left hand.

Do I go for some leaders, the codex or please my ADHD and go buy the spearhead box?

Also how do they play? Are they a long range faction, melee or a mixture of both?

TLDR just picked up the Combat Patrol and have no idea where to go from here.
