Fix a clean front cover split on a 90s paperback?

Just picked up a 90s Goosebumps paperback, but the front cover cleanly split off right next to the spine.

The back cover and spine are still totally attached to the text block. The front cover just has a clean vertical rip about 0.5 to 1 cm away from the joint, leaving a tiny paper tab on the spine. The paper is pretty brittle/acidic since it's an old Scholastic print.

I want to fix it so it's readable again. AI suggested using PVA glue and Japanese tissue on the inside to bridge the cover back to that tiny spine tab (making sure not to glue it to the first page).

Does that sound like the right approach for paper this brittle? Any tips on getting the seam to line up flush or what kind of materials to use?
