PräGnant

Help wanted…

I have just bought a PräGnant - Manual blocking press and some brass type ranging from 6 point to 36 point.

Has anyone had any success blocking two lines of type at the one time? If so any advice on how best to achieve that…

Thank you!

Is this mould?

Just took this book out from a shelf today and noticed this on the corner. I don't know what it is and I can't find anything similar on any of my other books. It was brand new when I got it, I've had it for a few years but not read it yet. There's no smell particularly, but to me it looks really bad. Can anyone help?

I need help with cleaning my books

I recently got the first 18 books in the redwall series from my local library for free. They all have stickers on them, and I'd really like to get them cleaned up. Is there anyone in the akron-cleveland area who would be willing to help me out? I unfortunately can't offer much right now, but I am willing to talk prices if anyone is local and willing?

Bible customization

I’m going to be a little vague in hopes he doesn’t find my post. Husband would like a specific Bible. I have figured out which one it is and it’s on order. I’m wanting to gift it to him for Father’s Day but I’m wanting to add our children’s handprints to it on a page.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to probably do the prints on a separate page and then glue it into the Bible- but I know Bible paper is different than your average run of the mill book. I’ll have a better idea when I have the Bible in my hands but I’m thinking of glueing it to the inside front page after of course I get the prints and “laminate” it with packing tape to make sure it doesn’t smear.

Is there a better way? If not any recommendations on glue? Can I use regular ol Elmer’s?

How to fix

I bought this limited run book of illustrations for around $100 about a year ago. It arrived and the top cover was bending upwards. I left it under heavier books for months hoping it would fix it. Unfortunately, it remained the same. Does anyone have a remedy for this? Any advice is appreciated.

Note: the box it arrived in was left in the rain for an hour or so. The book didn’t feel wet and there is no water damage to any pages, but I figured I should include this information in my

Is this an easy fix?

I bought this comic a few weeks back but didn’t noticed the cover was falling off. I’ve done book binding in the past but can’t remember how to fix this. Would appreciate advice.

How do I clean this ?

I recently bought this old copy of a clockwork orange while thrifting and found these dark spots on the sides on the pages and a black almost charcoal feeling spot on the front cover which I tried taking a small piece off with some alcohol but it made the orange tint slightly whiter.how should I clean it?

Fix a clean front cover split on a 90s paperback?

Just picked up a 90s Goosebumps paperback, but the front cover cleanly split off right next to the spine.

The back cover and spine are still totally attached to the text block. The front cover just has a clean vertical rip about 0.5 to 1 cm away from the joint, leaving a tiny paper tab on the spine. The paper is pretty brittle/acidic since it's an old Scholastic print.

I want to fix it so it's readable again. AI suggested using PVA glue and Japanese tissue on the inside to bridge the cover back to that tiny spine tab (making sure not to glue it to the first page).

Does that sound like the right approach for paper this brittle? Any tips on getting the seam to line up flush or what kind of materials to use?

Dented and Creased Spine

Is there any way to repair this kind of damage to a book spine? How do I fix this crease/dent?

Is there any hope of fixing this?

I got this book second hand ages ago, and it was already looking bad then, but it's falling apart at this point. I'm afraid my only option at this point would be re-binding it, because... well, you can see what the spine looks like, lmao.

Still, if anyone has any ideas or tips for me on how to maybe keep the current book cover, i'd appreciate it. I kind of like the design.

My book fell apart

Not sure what tag to add to this. I’ve never repaired a book.

Is there any way to fix this at home? If not, I’ll just go back and return it. I won’t have time to do so until Sun / Mon, and I work right next to an art store + have a ton of supplies stockpiled in my bedroom. Is there any salvaging this?

A little more context:

I just want to add, this book was $17 from a chain store (not B&N), and I haven’t bought a book from a bookstore in months, maybe longer. I usually stick to thrifts, hole in the wall shops, comic book shops (for graphic novels) and free libraries. My free and $5 books are holding up perfectly… the second I opened this $17 book though, it essentially just fell apart. I usually only buy books if the cards line up well. The author of this book promoted it in one of my favorite newspapers, I have a newspaper clipping of it up on my wall, so when I just happened to see it, I knew I needed it. I also got V for Vendetta, I watch the movie every year on Nov. 5th and have been searching for the book, AND I also got a very small pocket book on politics that I almost bought earlier, so when I saw it again, I caved.

Back to my $17 book… I DID persevere and finished a few chapters despite the torn off pages, and it’s a very good read. I don’t exactly want to go back and return it, but if I can’t find a solution by Sun / Mon, I will. (Briefly considered stapling it before realizing that that would making reading through it needlessly difficult and frusterating.)

Book Recovery

Discovered a rat/mouse infestation in my garage recently. Currently on the final stages of clean up. My wife and my books seem untouched but we know the smell has probably soaked into the pages. Is there any way we can save the books and not have to rebuy all of them book by book?

I got the bottom of my book wet and not the pages are stiff.

I’ve been borrowing a book from a friend, so I’ve been trying my best to keep it nice. I’ve had it for some time now, and to get through it faster, I bring it to school to read in my downtime. HUGE MISTAKE. I brought the book to school along with a water bottle in the same bag, allowing it to leak in my bookbag all day. Only the bottom of the book got wet, but since the incident, the pages have been stiff and wavy. How do I fix this?

Suggestions on this?

I of course imagine me pulling a bit on it to show you wasn’t a great idea, but is there any possible way to fix this? Should I just put tape on it or something? I’m sure i could just find a cheap and used divine comedy but I’d rather save the money.

Removing library film

Hello everyone,

I have a lot of books that I got for cheap from library sales, hardbacks and paperbacks. They always have very prominent shelf marks on the spine and they are bound in some kind of self-adhesive film.

Does anyone have experience with restoring old library books and removing these films and underlying shelf marks?

Could a beginner do it?

Thank you for your advice.

Best method for repairing head and tail of the spine?

I’m currently working on my first real book repair project, and I’m at a loss for how to handle the corners of the spine.

They’ve bent inwards and probably need to be reinforced somehow, but that part I think I can figure out (though I’d be happy to hear any tips or tricks!). That aside, I’m not sure how to go about patching such tiny holes in the book cloth. Would something like a band of book cloth over the entire area of the spine work? That feels like kind of a heavy handed solution though, and ideally my repairs would be as invisible as possible.

There’s also the issue of color matching the repairs, and what to use to apply said color. I’m fairly confident I could whip up the colors I needed with some gouache paint, but that reactivates with water so it’s probably not my best option. Are there specific paints most often used for book repair?

Any thoughts or tips anyone has would be greatly appreciated as I’ve been stuck on how to approach this for a few weeks now

Emerald green 1890s book got wet... how do I restore the consistent color

The book is like a vibrant emerald green, camera doesn't pick it up well. I attempted to wipe the stain off and got green powder on my cloth. Can old books be redyed? Also I am aware it's probably arsenic but I'm more concerned for the book.
