Old (70-130 y/o) book restoration and care
I got a couple old books from an apartment clearance. Since some of them are over a hundred years old I think it would be kind of nice to preserve them as good as I can and some of them don't seem to be printed anymore, though their recell price doesn't seem high. I also plan to read them, though one or two of the books might fall apart if not handled extra carefully.
I hope you guys can identify the type of damage and how to treat it if neccessary and how to take care of them in the future, in case they need any extra care.
The following is just a little break down of what I noticed and what I suspect would be a way of taking care of it. You can ignore it, everything important is visible on the pictures!
As visible in the pictures some of the books got a damaged spine. I guess covering it with the right type of tape, as it has previously been done with the book in pic2, would be the easiest way to fix it. The book in pic1 has basically blank pages, does that change anything?
Some of the pages look like salted wood when closed. The discoloration doesn't seem to cover the rest of the pages. Is it a result of fungi as with wood and if yes is spaying the edges of the pages with an alcohol solution enough?
One of the books has some pages already ripped out and it looks to me as if some of the other pages are partially falling out already. I do not mind loose pages while reading though I would love if I don't cause more pages to come loose. Not sure what to do outside of taking them together or beeing super careful handling the book. What do you think should or should I do?
The spots on the pages are probably just from dirty fingers and spillage of previous readers. I just added them in case I am mistaken.
