I was trying to record rain against my apartment window last week, and the first few takes all sounded wrong.

Too far from the glass and it turned into dull room noise. Too close and it picked up sharp tapping that was not relaxing at all. I moved the mic around four or five times before it finally sounded like rain.

That made me realize quiet room sounds need a quick placement check first. I used the DJI Mic Mini 2 for this because the transmitter is around 11g, so moving it around was easy. I tried it on the window ledge, near the curtain rod, and on the side of a metal lamp. The magnetic clip helped because I could attach it, listen back, then move it again.

Same thing happened with my desk fan. One spot sounded like empty air. Another spot had a soft low hum that was actually nice.

Small tip: for rain, fans, coffee machines, or room tone, try a few weird spots before recording the full take. A tiny mic that can clip on, hide easily, or attach to nearby surfaces makes that less annoying. Do you guys often move the mic around for quiet room sounds, or just find one clean spot and leave it there?
