Question about an event in The Great Hunt
Just started TDR on a reread and I have a lingering question from TGH. I don’t recall this not being answered at some point but I can’t recall the answer right now and it’s bothering me.
Who let Fain out of the dungeon in Fal Dara? The only thing that Ingtar tells Rand that he did was let the gray man that shot the arrow into the keep.
Fain makes a generic “oh I’m surprised it’s you letting me out” response when he is released but that could mean pretty much anyone.
So was it Lanfear? Ingtar? Verin(obviously acting under orders to maintain her cover)?
(Spoilers All) Foreshadowing in EotW on reread
We all know there is a lot of foreshadowing built into EotW, especially Min’s viewings; it truly is incredible how much RJ had already worked out about where each of these characters would ultimately end up.
Anyways, I noticed a very minor bit that I don’t recall having picked up on in any previous rereads. It involves Nynaeve channeling and occurs right after the party gets to Shadar Logoth.
Nynaeve is getting some herbs ready to help Moiraine rest/recover an we get this starting with Lan:
> “I made no accusation, Wisdom. I only said, have a care with your herbs.”
She gave him a look from the corner of her eye. “The fact is, she needs my herbs, and so do you.” Her voice was acerbic to start, and grew more tart as she spoke. “The fact is, she can only do so much, even with her One Power, and she has done about as much as she can without collapsing. The fact is, your sword cannot help her now, Lord of the Seven Towers, but my herbs can.”
Moiraine laid a hand on Lan’s arm. “Be at ease, Lan. She means no harm. She simply does not know.” The Warder snorted derisively.
Nynaeve stopped digging in her bag and looked at him, frowning, but it was to Moiraine she spoke. “There are many things I don’t know. What thing is this?”
Moiraine replies that she really just needs rest. What really was going on was Lan saying “have a care with your herbs and the one power that you are about to use on her when you have no actual idea of what you are really doing”.
Such a brief bit of conversation overheard by Rand as he’s walking by, and not something a first time reader would think twice about, but such a neat detail and shows that Moiraine had told Lan she could channel and he was not totally comfortable with it.
What do you all think, anyone else noticed this or have any other under-the-radar bits they liked?
