Question about shipping from USA to Australia (Collecting import fees)

I use Shopify as my website and I'd like to add shipping to AU and NZ. Managed Markets is too expensive and the payouts take too long - so I'm trying to set up a regular shipping zone that is handled completely by me. I don't understand the option to "collect duties and import tax". If I collect those, how do I remit them? Is it included in what is paid to the shipping carrier?

I'd also like to have the option to ship through Pirate Ship if it's cheaper than Shopify labels, but if I'm collecting those duties then I'm not sure how that will work. I've only shipped to the US & Canada for a long time, so I'm nervous about this. Thank you!

Shopify Shipping Label Issues / Bugs

I'm having issues with my Shopify shipping label costs; like a bug or glitch. I just went to fulfill an order - the customer was charged $8.95 but the label was going to be over $10. I changed the package back to the store default, which includes some additional weight, and the price went down to $7.95. A bigger box and heavier weight was cheaper (10" cube 2.375 lbs compared to a 9x8x5" at 2lbs). It makes no sense. I'm basically having to stick with the store default box or it messes up. It should be cheaper for less weight so these prices are definitely not right and I'm wondering where this money is going and how many people are overpaying for labels.
