Mirroring the opposite question someone asked a few days ago, what do people think would have happened in a universe where Hannibal never meets Will, and Will never had the opportunity to “change him”?
In short, I’ve got a section of my book where the protagonist is alone and reflecting on the people he’s left behind whilst feeling immense sadness and loneliness.
My placeholder descriptions are frankly awful and hackneyed- I don’t believe my character would actually sob, for example.
I’m thinking of replacing the current melodrama with a kind of “pared back to 10% version“ of the current wording, for example replacing “sob” with “heavy exhale”; changing “drops to his knees“ (I know, I know, it’s bad! 😂) with “slowly sinks into a chair”. etc.
But I’d love to know what you guys do to adequately show feelings such as this - it’s strong stuff he’s feeling, but (especially as a female writer writing a male protagonist) I really want this to feel authentic and not overblown.
TL;DR Can I use my own experiences of grief/pain or will this read as too “female”?
What do you yourself tend to do to convey without cliche?!

Ok, for those of you who didn’t read my previous post, this is the prologue and first few chapters of my a fic I’m working on; I hope you enjoy.
I will be publishing the whole work on AO3 once I’ve done a second draft, on a schedule of a few chapters a week once I’ve finished redrafting.
For those of you who don’t read unfinished works, the fic is complete- it has a beginning, a middle and an end, and is currently at 80k words, which will grow as I rework; I anticipate maybe even as long as 100k words total.
I won’t leave anyone hanging with an unfinished/WIP work! 🙂
Briefly, the premise of the story is that we begin with the Ambulance scene from Sorbet in S1; Will then goes to visit Hannibal afterwards before he hosts his big dinner party, again as per canon.
But then a small differing event changes everything to a divergent “timeline” and this is where the story begins in earnest.
There are tweaks to make still; this is still “in draft”, but I need to take the first step in getting my very first fic out there else I’ll never be brave enough.
Here we go…

…what do you think he’s really seeing...?
I’m currently editing my first novella, and I’m looking at pacing and timing of the various scenes and how they flow. (for reference, first draft is 80k words and second will be longer as I have started to discover what needs to be added).
The first third (almost exactly; I’ve checked the word count) is made up of long-ish chapters, which stay with one character at a time for lots of character/chemistry building, setting the scene and getting the plot in place.
But once it gets to 1/3 into the story, a lot more starts to happen and quickly- a burgeoning relationship comes to fruition, there’s a big revelation and then an additional twist to keep readers excited/engaged to keep reading up to the second half and to the end. At this point, chapters get puncher, shorter and choppier, jumping quickly from POV to POV and back again across storylines to try to match the energy and excitement I’m hopimg to evoke.
TL;DR - my question is, will the change in pace evoke the change in feel/tone I want it to, or will it just confuse my readers with the sudden shift in “feel”?
What in your opinion is the single saddest frame from the whole 3x series?
For me it’s a tie between this and “please don‘t lie to me.”

Hannibal, having his “fuck it, I’m going back to the old me“ moment, is as happy as a clam at this point; wearing a distinctly un-Hannibal-like *Hawaiian shirt*, no less, and playing super-upbeat, un-Hannibal-like music on the harpsicord:
“Yup; my Will is coming back for me“ (I’m paraphrasing, but… 😂)
Ok so we know Hannibal is a lover of all things fine and elevated, including opera.
I’d love to get a consensus on whether this would include the theatre? I think TV Hannibal would probably love to go to see very weighty, lengthy plays, fraught with meaning and very sombre; I’m thinking perhaps Shakespeare, Brecht, Arthur Miller, etc… no musical theatre lol!

Mads’ portrayal of Hannibal is so considered; you can tell he’s a dancer as every move in his portrayal is so deliberate.
I’m sure it’s been observed before how rarely Hannibal blinks there’s something beautifully shark-like and predatory in that choice.
In Relevés, there’s a moment when Hannibal has the realisation that he’s going to have to frame Will; and he not only blinks, he closes his eyes to it for a moment- it’s heartbreaking. Then, he opens his eyes again and he’s resolved.
I love this damn show so much!
We know Will wears Old Spice, but I’d love to know what people think Hannibal smells like.
My bet is something fantastically exotic and expensive with hints of bergamot and smoke scents, but I’m curious what Will would scent on him should he ever choose to snuggle up with him (perhaps whilst wearing that famous red jumper) 🙂
The above quote is from Sorbet, at which point in the show Will has already been present for several of Hannibal’s murders/tableaux; (albeit not with him killing as the Ripper but in the guise of other killers.) (Am I correct in thinking that the first murder scene Will sees where Hannibal is killing AS the Ripper is Beverly?)
In fact, it’s well into S2 before anyone except Miriam has anything approaching the correct idea as to who the Ripper is.
Will normally has such a clear vision as to who a killer is once he does his “visualisation” at a crime scene, but this quote is so off-base for Will, he sees the Ripper as a sad creature who needs to be put out of his misery.
TL;DR - Simply, I would love people’s opinions on why Will is just so unable to *see* the Ripper in S1 when normally his skills are so finely honed due to his empathic disorder.
