Smart plug for gas water heater

Bear with me ... I know the title is probably confusing ...

I moved into my current house about 3 months ago and I've got an "issue" that I am trying to solve without tearing my basement ceiling out.

The water heater is a gas unit with electronic ignition (no pilot light) and power vent. It is in the garage and the exhaust runs above my finished basement ceiling to the opposite side of the house. My bedroom is above where it exits. When the water heater runs, the PVC vent expands and rubs on something (stud probably) and pops like crazy, both while heating up when it starts and while cooling when the water heater shuts off. During the day/evening, not an issue ... during the night (it normally runs once in the night that I can tell) ... it wakes me up and I hate that. I'm thinking about putting this thing on a smart plug and shutting it off between something like midnight and 6AM.

Everyone normally showers in the evening and the unit is pretty efficient anyway and warms water quickly, so I really don't have any concerns with water, but wanted to get some opinions on what folks here think about this "solution".

Best time of the year!

Really enjoying the mild spring time weather before we get into our typical hot and humid period (though that has never really stopped my from driving top down).

Here’s to year 6 with this old girl.
