Fuel pump and regulator - NOT FUN

My regulator was leaking from the return line. It seemed to get worse over time (bought it this way). When I could visually see the gas dripping, I decided it needed to be done. Not to mention you would get high stepping into the garage.

I got both replacements from Delphi. The pump DID NOT want to fit. This has been documented a few times as recently as this month. I may have to just switch the internals from that to the OE basket.

Dropped the exhaust and shielding. Going to do the engine mounts and trans mounts now.

Drove around a bit with open dump. Definitely down on torque. Quite loud at higher RPM. Tons of burbles. Waiting on my exhaust gaskets.

Let's play ID the headlight

I purchased my lightly modified '08 3.0i almost 2 years ago and I need help Id'ing what I think is an aftermarket headlight brand. I've had an intermittent low beam bulb outage on the passenger side headlight for a couple of months. It usually presents itself as a random flickering or complete outage, and can often be brought back by a high-speed pass over the railroad tracks. Fun but not always convenient. More recently it has just remained off. I know for sure it's not a bulb problem and I don't believe that it is a plug issue, but you never know.

However, yesterday Central Ohio had some exceptional weather roll through including an intense downpour which flooded some city streets, and I got caught in cross traffic where some absolute turd coming the other way drove a wave literally over my hood and up onto the windshield. Before y'all jump on me for all the other things, everything's fine. No water in the engine. Pulled the air box, wet-vac'd out the water, dried everything with microfiber, replace the air filter and cleaned the MAF.

The problem is I now have some exceptional condensation in my passenger side headlight. This weekend I'm going to pull it and try to dry it out, and see if I can ensure that it's well sealed. But considering I have the flickering low beam issue anyway, I might need to replace it. I'd rather not guess at what the brand is, and I'd also not like to have to buy a pair to make sure they match.

Improvement on Bridgestone Turanza?

Seems I need to replace my tyres... Currently running Bridgestone Turanza which were on the car when I bought it.

Just wondering whether others have changed from one tyre to another and noticed a significant difference? What difference? Especially interested in anyone who moved away from Bridgestone Turanzas.

I've always had a good experience with Kumho and Hankook tyres on other cars. Anyone any experience of these on a Zed?

Thanks

UK Vehicle Pre Check App

Hi all,

I’ve created an app which allows you to get a vehicle pre check score for prospective purchases - it actually started as a registration to VIN tool as I thought it would be quite handy for E85 owners like myself when researching parts.

Please use the code FREEZ4 for a limited number of lookups, hope it helps out other Z4 owners.

https://vehicleprecheck.com

Obligatory pic of the car attached, 2003 3.0i, prob when it looked best with the 19” 326M alloys! Changed wheels to 18” 224M to improve ride comfort and the 326Ms have a history of cracking. Love this car.

Grabbed a handschalter

With production ending, I had to accelerate my midlife crisis car purchase plan, but I'm so glad I did. I learned to drive stick on my dad's old 3 series back in the day and this instantly felt like an old friend.

I love this car

Owned close to 30 vehicles, and still have a few others in the stable. This $2000 SI has been amazing. Still has its share of issues, but ease of working on it and driving feel make it one of my top 3.

Recommendations on a 2009 Z4 3.0i.

So I am getting ready to buy a 2009 Z4 3.0i with 115k miles on it. I went and saw the car and it is in really great cosmetic condition with only a single tiny door ding and the expected under body scratches on the front bumper (you can't see it unless you lay down to look under the car.

Mechanically it runs great with one questionable issue. The parking brake engages and disengages properly however, once disengaged, the light turns from red to yellow and stays on while the car is running.

Plugged an OBDII tool and it threw a EGS 5087 tool. I further discovered this is what happens: when I switch to Manual mode, within a few seconds it shifts right back to D (Automatic).

I read more into it and things that were said:

  1. Parking light could be due to a low voltage of battery at some point.

  2. Fuse 129 may need to replaced or unplugged/plugged back in again.

  3. EGS 5087 is due to pinched/damaged or broken wires under shifter gear.

Anyone had any experience with these? Am I making a mistake? If I go through with the sale, it will be for $9000 including ttl.

Look forward to the group's guidance and insight! Thank you in advance

Shopping.

I should have started shopping for a Z4 months ago. Now that I’m interested and ready to commit, every time a dealer claims to have found a car, it’s allocated to some other dealer who won’t give it up. I’ve given a deposit to one dealer - who’s already told me that the first car he found was sold to someone else. Now I’m waiting to find out they can swap for a second car that they’ve found - but is allocated to another dealer. I’m getting the usual reasons for waiting - dealers they don’t have a relationship don’t always respond quickly to swaps.

I’m in the NY area - what are my options? I’m only interested in an M40, definitely auto, preferably with Driving Assistance, Shadowline and Premium packages.

Thanks

2007 Z4 with 145k miles

Someone wants to trade a z4 with 145k miles for my motorcycle. I have never owned a BMW. What should I look out for if I make the trade. How long does the transmission and motor on these are expected to last? What are the major services and how much do they cost?

Thanks

Soft top broken- need help!

I know this is the most common problem of all time on the Z4, but I've been trying to fix this for half an hour so far with no results. I put my roof down earlier today, and now when I try to raise the roof it only gets to about halfway up before stiffening up and refusing to move any further. I have already pulled the emergency release in the trunk and tried to put it up that way, it doesn't work either. Any help would be greatly appreciated because it's going to rain tomorrow and I don't have a garage.

You best sub US$100 E85 upgrades?

Just wondering which cheap(ish) upgrades are you E85/85 owners most happy with? Please share. Here are some of mine...

  • Android Auto (+CarPlay) head unit. $70 from Amazon. Also gives me a reversing camera and both front and back dash cams.
  • Keyring garage door remote. $10 for two from Amazon. Means I don't have to leave an opener in the car and it's always at hand.
  • Low profile USB charger. $8 from Amazon. Fits in cabin cigarette lighter port and allows lid to close. Provides 69W on two ports.
  • Interior LED lamp kit. $8 from AliExpress. Replaces all cabin and trunk lamps with LEDs that are brighter, whiter, and run cooler than originals.
  • Headlight eyebrows (see photo). $5 roll of duct tape. I expect this to be controversial. 😋

My Z4 journey

I bought this car last winter abandoned outside of a shop for a few years. This poor thing was sitting outside not covered. The car was sitting at 94k miles, first thing I wanted to do was to get it mechanically sorted. Rod bearing was replaces followed by valves adjustment. Next on the list was the convertible top motor, and cosmetic repairs, I repainted the front bumper, took out a huge dent on fender and re-installed the front and rear bumper with proper mounts. She also got new continental contact sports tires paired with a freshly refinished OEM rims. After all was done, I’m into the car at 10k. I couldn’t be happier with how the car is currently performing. I still have a long list of small things I need go do. I hope to keep her around for a long time. Cheers 🍻

Build updates

Zimmerman rotors
Akebono pads
Dinan coils
Ngk plugs
Tune by chaos calibrations this week and velocity stacks from @printables
Also bunch of cosmetics little mods, balancing center caps, arm oil filter cap, printables goodies, etc

Any build suggestions or ideas? I really don’t know what to do with interior but exterior I’m gonna get m bumper and probably some 18’s idk which, some alibaba rep tho, some 19’s peak my interest but I’ve heard it’s no go, any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I also have eccentric shaft sensor and such coming this week in the mail hopefully, but it’s nothing of interest. If anyone has a Dinan strut bar please pm me.

Yes the crooked bmmr sticker is removed I saw the picture and was pissed Lol.

Engine bay photos

  1. 3sim/intake view, all will be deleted by end of this week via velocity stacks, new m strut caps and an ARM oil cap filter that’s metal and shiny Lol. Has anyone heard bad things about metal vs oem plastic oil filter cap btw? I heard something from a friend but idk.

  2. Engine cover off. Showing blue Dinan coils, I imagine same as the tms ones and other brands with those n series coils. I want to get a Dinan strut bar I saw on the forums but I’ve been focused on performance then cosmetic. Also that eccentric shaft sensor under the valve cover is a fun job I look forward to Wednesday, preventative for the velocity stacks, and to clear the only codes on the car, plausible shaft sensor valvetrojic motor. I plan to get 22rpd heat shield to add cosmetic mods too and get rid of the ugly oem one.

  3. Test fit photo of custom e85/e86 z4 catch can bracket thanks to @Printablesauto on IG. He also made the nice strut caps for me for free!! One of the best guys in the BMW community and I highly recommend you go follow him and help a small business out. Also one of the bad parts on the car was that torn up foam from a rat I assume near the firewall, I wasn’t lying when I said the previous owner let the car sit for 5 years and then replaced it all Lol, he averaged 400mi a year according to carfax. Big Harley guy.

  4. Photo of brake job from yesterday. New Zimmerman z coat rotors combined with Akebono pads. Any recommendations for a big brake kit for all four would be great as I plan to do that in a year or two. From what I took in online, the Zimmerman Akebono combo is really good for slightly better oem performance.

If anything looks odd please tell me as it can only help most likely. Also does anyone have suggestions for rotor set screws? I had an issue with one and replaced the front two screws but I’m worried about taking them off again, is there any alternatives?

Thanks!

Bilstein B6 vs B4 longevity and ride quality?

Some people claim that the monotube designs on the B6 should last longer than B4’s twin tube, but realistically how much difference in longevity is there? I would be keeping the stock M sports suspension springs. This is on an E85 3.0si; the upper strut mounts and boots are all going to be replaced as well. Am I going to regret the stiffness of the B6?
