Dyno test & speed runs Z4 3.0i E85

As a follow-up to my previous post about the (suspected) acceleration issues of my automatic Z4 3.0i E85, which can be found here:

My local mechanic suggested a dyno test to diagnose the issue, which I just did. I also got a GPS acceleration tracker (Race Logic or RaceBox in my case) and made a few speed runs this weekend.

  1. The dyno test.

Make: Dynocom. We did three runs. The first one resulted in precisely 231 hp. The other two surprisingly showed 241+ hp and 221-222 ft-lbs (~300 Nm) of torque, with a 15% drivetrain loss coefficient. So it's pretty much around the factory spec, if not better.

We did notice a slight torque drop @4000 and @4300 rpm. It looks like this might be where DISA and VANOS kick in, however, I'm not sure if these drops are normal or a slight malfunction. Any thoughts on this are welcome. I am adding the dyno chart to the photos.

  1. The speed runs.

The weather today was cool and dry, around 50F (9-10C), so it was a perfect time for the test. (BTW I still struggle to change the temp gauge from F to C, any suggestions on how to tackle that?).

I also inflated the tires to 2.3 bar front and 2.5 bar rear and had around 50% fuel. I made a few runs and honestly, I was quite surprised by my times:

· The best run: 0-60 km/h in 3.17 sec / 0-100 km/h in 6.63 sec.

· Another run: 3.41 / 6.76 respectively, with 0-200 km/h in 24.44 sec. 1/4 mile in 14.9 sec.

To wrap it up: I am now way more satisfied and at ease, given that the actual numbers are not that bad. Of course, I have to take into account that I am running lighter rims (only 9 kg each) and it was a perfect temp for the test, yet I got 6.6 sec, so I suspect DISA and VANOS might need some attention in the future. But for now, at least the engine seems to be in very good condition, and I will just enjoy the last sunny days before winter finally comes.

Why celebrities are silent about PWM?

How is it that practically nobody of the world's celebrities or politicians have ever complained about PWM or screen sensitivity?

I've searched Google and used AI, and there are literally no traces of anyone publicly talking about this disorder.

If we roughly estimate the global number of celebrities, sportsmen, and politicians at ~1 million people - which is a tiny 0.012% of the global population - it is incredible that really no one has spoken a word about the issue.

Most of them would likely have an iPhone as their main device.

Edit: I agree to some extent with the theories that well-known people might have different priorities. They might be too shy to speak up about a "niche" problem for fear of looking weird or nerdy, or they might not want to blame major manufacturers due to their advertising contracts.

It was also good to know that there are at least some non-PWM community influencers (well, just one for now) who do acknowledge PWM/flicker and promote the necessity of introducing healthier screens in our devices.

What I don't believe is that there isn't a single globally recognized actor, actress, or athlete who is genuinely affected by PWM. By "globally recognized," I mean someone on the scale of Cristiano Ronaldo, Leonardo DiCaprio, Dua Lipa, or any pop star of your choice. I imagine stars like that still scroll through Instagram and Facebook or watch YouTube.

We also know that when something unfair, ignorant, or unjust is happening, celebrities often don't hesitate to speak the truth.

Therefore, I would actually expect that at least someone really well-known and influential would have already been affected by this issue, if not one of their friends or relatives. A star like that would just need a little bit of guts to raise the issue and speak up. I am just surprised that no one has done so yet.

P.S. I would be glad to try to reach out to someone. Of course, you wouldn't just bluntly text or email every influencer you see; instead, there should be some criteria / shortlist of those worth reaching out to with a polite request to speak up about it.

Mosquitos around Nov-Dec

Hello everyone, I am just curious whether mosquitos are an issue in Floripa and the rest of the island around November-December? Is the dengue still a risk after 2024? Or is it like most of the locals do have an immunity so that's not a big deal anymore?

Wondering if heavily applying of repellent would be enough for a tourist to stay safe...

0-100 E85

What's your 0-100 km/h time?

Curious, because my 3.0i automatic seems slightly off the spec.

A 2003 E85 3.0i 5-speed automatic with 81k km.

17 inch wheels.

0-100 km/h as measured with a timer and a speedometer: 7.1 sec with DSC off. Made several checks.

Ambient temp. 21-24 Celcious when measured (70-75 F).

The car is equiped with lighter 17 inch forged wheels, so definitely not the excess rotating mass effect.

What's been previously done:

New spark plugs.

Replaced oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter.

Serviced the gearbox and the main gear.

No service errors.

The pistons have been visually checked with a camera as a pre-purchase inspection. Compression haven't been measured.

The servicemen said DISA & Vanos are OK, no replacement needed.

The spec is around 6.2-6.4 sec. The numbers and the impression is that the car slightly lags in the low RPMs but I am not sure.

Any thoughts on what could be the issue?

What are your normal 0-100 times?

Is that smth uncommon to have a 7+ sec for a 23 y.o. E85? Given a relatively low mileage and quite a comprehensive service.

AI suggests that it is likely VANOS or DISA...

103 Style rims

Need your advice, have found some claimed brand new Style 103 wheels, but I wonder if they are really new or rather painted pre-used rims? The word 'Germany' just looks a bit as covered with a excess paint, while the rest of text looks OK. Do they really look as original OEM rims or am I just overthinking?
