Proud of completing multiple Mario games 100% while visually impaired

This is my first post here on Reddit, and I felt like I had to share this because I’m honestly proud of what I achieved.

First, I should mention that I am visually impaired. I can only see around 10–15%. My biggest problem is contrast. That’s one of the reasons why I switched to Nintendo Switch games.

Super Mario Odyssey was my first game, and I absolutely loved it. I completed it 100%, including Darker Side. That level was not extremely difficult for me, mostly just very long. The hardest challenge was jump rope because I simply could not see the rope properly. I admit that I used a glitch for that challenge, but everything else was completed normally.

After that, I completed Super Mario 3D World 100% as well. That game was also amazing, especially Champion’s Road. That level was really tough! I probably needed around 2000 attempts to beat it. The feeling afterwards was incredible. The hardest part for me was the swimming section with the spike blocks. The colors were a nightmare for someone visually impaired like me. I kept losing track of my character, especially Rosalina because of her blue dress. Eventually I decided to use the Tanooki Suit during the swimming section because the darker colors gave me much better contrast. I was really proud when I finally beat Champion’s Road because I know many people cannot beat that level. Funny enough, now I actually think it’s easy. Once you learn the route and find your own strategy, it becomes much more manageable.

After that, I played Super Mario Galaxy and completed it 100% too. A huge advantage of that game for me is that many levels have a black space background, which gives me perfect contrast. At first I thought the game was pretty difficult, but replaying it with Luigi felt much easier. The Purple Coins mission in Dreadnought Galaxy is honestly not that hard. In the final section with all the Bullet Bills, you can safely stand near the edge of the platform, let the Bullet Bills pass, grab the coins, and wait for the moving panels to return if needed. Luigi’s Purple Coins is also easier than many people think. At first I rushed too much and died often, but later I discovered that you actually have more time than expected on the disappearing platforms. Once I learned that, it became a really fun challenge.

Of course I also had to buy Super Mario Galaxy 2, and I completed that game 100% too. I was really excited for The Perfect Run because I had read online that it was almost as difficult as Champion’s Road. Honestly, I was surprised by how manageable it became once I learned the sections. Sections 4 and 6 were the hardest for me at first, but after learning the route, section 4 actually became very easy — even easier than section 3.

In the final section with the Hammer Bros., I discovered a helpful strategy: you can crouch to avoid the boomerangs. I slowly moved forward while crouching, waited for the boomerangs to return, and then defeated the enemy safely. The hardest section for me was actually the very first Yoshi section because of the bright background and aiming issues. As someone visually impaired, it was difficult to see where I needed to point. Luckily I eventually mastered it.

Lastly, I also completed Super Mario Wonder 100%. That was actually my first 2D Mario game. Very fun game. The Final-Final Test Badge Marathon was a nice challenge, but not extremely difficult overall. Only the final invisible section gave me trouble. Then I came up with a funny solution: Mario is almost always positioned near the center of the screen, so I placed a thin string exactly in the middle of my TV to track his position. It actually worked, haha.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this because I’m genuinely proud of what I achieved despite my poor eyesight. I often read online that many players struggle to complete these challenges, so I hope this encourages some people.

Patience and never giving up are the most important things.

I’m now thinking about buying Super Mario Sunshine. Is it worth it?
