Found in his water bowl today very curious some people said some type of sand spur but just want to see what people have to say . About a finger nails size just a bit smaller

Lone star

This is my first lab and the first time I have ever had to deal with ticks in North Carolina , i found a lone star tick on him and pulled it out what I assume is successfully. Is there any worries I should have following this ? And any recommendations to prevent ticks going on ?
