Thinking about trying to make a Sega CD clone machine

As we all know, the Sega CD, while very nice and novel to own, is prone to failures due to age, so I was thinking while staring at my genesis (which i have sitting on top of a DVD player) what if I got some inexpensive disc drive, a couple of chips, soldering alloy and other miscellaneous parts and built a replica sega cd?

I get it, its a pie in the sky "this guy is a blockhead just get an emulator" sort of idea, but I've kind of seen it done before. The polymega and the terraonion MegaSD apparently run sega cd games, and one of those things is just a cartridge. So, assuming I and a couple of my buddies get the skills to put together this "Sega Franken-CD" this could be a fun project to pursue. Constructive feedback and thoughts would be appreciated .
