I noticed the other day that Discord refuses to connect when my VPN (Mullvad) is enabled. Is this expected? Is Discord no longer a viable option for VPN users?

I also noticed it will log in when the VPN is disabled but continue working when you re-enable the VPN. Which tells me that it is either isolated to authentication servers, or an intentional (but poor) block.
