Shirabe Meshi, the only running Symphogear project, has ended.
takecomic.jpI genuinely believe DE should aim for all of their quests to be 1-2 hours long.
This is the third of fourth time I've seen the community complain about a quest being too short within the last 2-3 years, so I'm just going to rant for a bit here despite already having accepted that is just how Warframe is:
Short quests were fine when they were just about throwing a Warframe at you, but now that DE clearly has more cinematic ambitions you NEED more run time.
I'm just going to name the devil right now, a lot of mid-budget Gacha games (A business model not unfamiliar to Reb) have their event stories be exactly that long because it is enough time to get users attached to flavor of the month characters and scenarios, while also not putting too much of a strain on the writing team in a live service game model that needs to release content on a monthly or bi-monthly basis.
With the new direction Warframe has taken, DE is now trying to SELL actual human characters relatively frequently, just like Gacha games are. These characters need to be explored, and DE was aware of this when they created the 1999 update and KIM system. The community has already talked about the issue with Vena and Ryoku a lot, but I would like to point that Orion and Sirius have the exact same issue. Despite looking like normal Warframes, these two have a very unique origin and are fully conscious, human beings that have spend 18 years as Warframes that GROW. They're not in some mind-altered state, and they're not 3d printed clones. They have also presumably spend many of those 18 years being actual child soldiers, considering the futures they are from are apocalyptic. Their entire identities are explored even less than those of Vena and Ryoku, who at least get voice lines during the missions and as Protoframes.
Reb has cited Future Trunks from DBZ as an inspiration for Sirius and Orion. Future Trunks had a whole 2 episode TV special made that fully explores his childhood, INCLUDING the relationship he had with this mentor.
If the issue is that you don't want people to sit through 2 hours of intercept missions, stop delivering the majority of content through voiceover in missions and create an actual dialogue system where characters can just TALK. KIM is already essentially that, but throwing people into KIM mid quest would feel terrible and cheap.
If the issue is that the additional voicelines would be too expensive, why are we even attempting cinematic quests featuring multiple characters instead of short stories about a single character?
If the issue is file size, a lot of gacha games feature files that are downloaded on demand and can be deleted later. Warframe already has a mobile release so it seems worth looking into anyway.
If the issue is that it would be too much for the writing team, you need to expand the writing team even more or change direction.
If the issue is you think people can't handle that much dialogue in quests, create a system that lets them skip it. Some people just don't care, and you can't make them care. Even FF14, which is beloved by many people for its story, let's you move the dialogue as fast as you want it to be.
If the issue is that you don't want to lock people out of the main functions of the game for that long, which got brought up as an issue with the New War by both players and developers, you need to stop locking people out and code the quests in 2-4 30 minute chunks or stop the locking entirely. The "Immersion" isn't worth the tradeoff.
Rant over.
