4-player brawl strategies?

While my understanding of normal 1-vs-1 play is growing, I still don't have good strategies for 4-player brawl. I enjoy it, but usually come out last and I fail at copying the strategies of other players; I obviously miss something.

Economy is even more important than in 1-vs-1 here, I think, and you get that by killing AI units and the ones from whoever's in the lead. I found some tricks like getting a Rhino assault and dropping it on a tower to get 100 points (center) or 60 (outer ones). What else are important things about brawl economy?

I usually try to get some unit that can heal itself, and get it to level. To mixed results, especially when the Melter do what they're for and bring down the beefy level 5 Overloard. What I often struggle is the AI onslaught that often catches me on the wrong foot. On the other hand, trying to only bring down the AI onslaught down fast is costly and what you need changes every round, so you need to focus on something?

In short, what are some good strategies for brawl, and can you recommend any guides/videos?

Help me understand why I struggled

So in an effort to learn what I'm doing wrong, here's a game where I struggled throughout the whole game and never managed to adequately react to my opponent: Link to replay, the screenshots show my side and opponents side on the last round.

I would appreciate critique and hints as to what I should do better.

Some of my thoughts throughout the game:

  • Round 1: I picked a side where I expected my opponent to push and put most of my stuff there. Prepared setup to insert crawlers on round 2.
  • Round 2: I notice he's going for mass marksmen and I think I need to counter with a large number of (individual) units. So I add three crawlers. From the unit drops, Phoenix seemed the most useful to me.
  • Round 3: My chaff is not doing well even though there's no chaff clear on the opponent's side. Did not understand why, now I think I know: too many opponent units vs just one chaff. I go for hounds in an attempt to clear his chaff on the weak side faster (also consider them to be a little bit of chaff as well), and add a second Phoenix to aid the other.
  • Round 4: I add another crawler to the left side to improve my odds in the chaff war. Since I have no idea what else to do I try to flank with two wasps, hoping to bring down his tower and maybe one or two marksmen. Complete failure against the Fangs. I've also added Incendiary Bombs to my Hounds to help against his Sledgehammers and Sabertooth.
  • Round 5: Close to being defeated, desperate. I get a level 2 Wasp for my left side and give them range, add a level 1 Crawler as protection against a missile on the flank, and level 2 Crawler on my left side to further improve the chaff war. Also get Enhanced Range from the tower. That worked, this is the only round I won.
  • Round 6: Unit drop, I think the level 3 Scorpion is useful so I get it. I think my opponent already has a lot of anti-air with Marksmen and Mustangs, so I decide to go a different direction and get Stormcallers. Get countered hard by Farseers.
  • Game Over.

I hate this game

I just need to vent a little. I discovered Mechabellum about 2 months ago and gave it a try even though it's not the type of game I usually play. At first, I enjoyed it, watched hours of guides by RoosterPB and some others, and slowly rose.

About two or three weeks ago I made it to MMR 900. Not great, but it's something. And since then, it's downwards only. Nowadays I barely manage to stay above MMR 700.

I learn a new trick (often by reading about it here), try it out, get countered hard. Almost every time. Sometimes by people in the 5xx range. Sometimes I understand why I lost, often times I don't and I have lost the will to even save and analyze my replays. Just today, I've won once and lost eight times.

How to break through this blockade? At this point I wonder why I'm still playing this thing instead of deleting it and doing something more useful with my time... yet I'm somehow addicted. But if I can't turn this around soon I do have to quit Mechabellum.
