Job opportunities in [Stavanger] as an international student visa holder (20 hrs/week)

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to move to Stavanger to pursue a Master’s degree in Computer Science. I will be on a student residence permit and I fly over July 30th and will take the night train from Oslo. I’ll be allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during the semester.

I’m wondering what jobs should I focus on to find part-time work in Stavanger with my background. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics, and I’m hoping to earn around 12000 NOK/month if possible. I have also worked in the food industry here in the U.S.A for over eight years as a cook, caterer, and server.

My Norwegian is still limited, but I have completed one Norwegian course and got a C grade. I would say less than A1 but I’m continuing to improve, but I’m not fluent yet. I will be signing up for classes with the nonprofit Caritas in Stavanger to hopefully get a perminant job here one day.

I’m open to different types of work, including:

- IT support / help desk

- programming or tech-related student jobs

- university jobs

- customer service

- warehouse/logistics

- other restaurant/hot foods part-time work

For those who are international students or have hired international students in Stavanger:

- How difficult is it to find a 20-hour/week job?

- Are English-speaking jobs common?

- Would my CS background help much, or should I focus on general student jobs?

My budget of 12000 nok would be preferred but I could dip a bit lower. A 200 NOK/hour would be fantastic. I also already have a bank account with DNB set up last time I did a semester abroad in preparation of comming back and I still think my d-number is active since I haven't been gone for more than a year yet. I want to start working as soon as I get my personnummeret.

Over the summer i plan to work as much as humanly possible as well.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
