AMA: Affordable homes designed for kinship families
Hey, all. I'm a foster mom in Montana and reporter for USA TODAY. I just published a story about Vermillion Place, a community with 26 duplexes designed for kinship families (who get priority consideration on applications).
Denise Chattams of Dayton, Ohio, shared her family's story about struggling with finances after she and her elderly mother agreed to raise her niece and nephew when her sister couldn't. Getting this duplex let them all live together again. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2026/05/14/caring-for-kin-homes-solutions-families-kinship-foster-care/89859123007/
Also wanted to share this list of similar housing developments around the country in case it helps anyone here: https://www.gksnetwork.org/resources/housing-developments-for-grandfamilies/
And for folks interested in other ways to support kinship families, Ohio has some other programs not seen in many states, including subsidies similar to what is paid to folks who adopt from foster care: https://www.ohiolegalhelp.org/topic/KPI
Ask me anything about the story, kinship policies I've researched or how I do my job as a journalist. :)
