I got a question about the "Reality" of the Show

So I just started Supernatural (got nothing better to do) and wondered:

How serious did the writers Take all the Supernatural stuff?

I mean something like the Latin stuff Dean says to exorcise demons, all the Legends and stuff.

I know it's not "Real Real" but everything in the Show. How true of the legends from our world is in Supernatural?
