I'd be interested to hear what a clue needs to intrigue you enough to really want to know the answer. Below are some suggestions, but maybe there are other things you look for.
Concise: A clue with very few words.
Long and intricate: You like the process of unravelling many clue elements.
Surface reading: A micro-story that looks like it could be lifted from prose or a news headline; compelling and doesn't read like a crossword clue.
Reads like a crossword clue: Surface doesn't matter; you like clues that clearly signpost the def/wordplay elements.
Clue types: Charades, anagrams etc.
Post-solve satisfaction: Discovering cleverly worded definitions or wordplay elements.
Other: Please describe your solving pleasure buttons.
Discovered today that I was 12 years old by the time the UK got its first McDonalds. Came as a (somewhat depressing) shock. What about you?
