I’m doing a reread, and the part where Islington and Hawkes vouch for Emma’s character for Mr Harper is one of the funniest scenes in the series. First, (or firstly iykyk) when she decides not to ask Saff because she’d just asked her to forge a letter is great, and makes Islington pause. Then, the duke shows up to the Cleopatra as they are singing a drinking song about Emma. Finally, the men’s “faint praise” of her is just so funny. Side note: I’d love if Emma begins making money by writing for the Gazette or another paper.
