Ciao a tutti,

cercherò di essere breve. Sono un dottorando che sta facendo ricerca nell'intersezione tra Machine Learning e Finanza (più sul versante ML), attualmente verso la fine del mio dottorato (mancano pochi mesi alla fine dei miei 3 anni). Quello che posso dire è che il mio dottorato non è stato un gran successo, anche paragonando i miei risultati in termini di pubblicazioni con i miei colleghi (non ho paper a top conf come Neurips, ICML etc), ma sto facendo un dottorato ad un'università buona in italia e ho svolto un periodo all'estero in una università abbastanza rinomata.

Siccome sta per scadere il tempo, sto iniziando un po' a guardarmi in torno su quali sono le possibilità e mi sento un po' perso. Sicuramente in questo primo periodo punto a rimanere all'estero per diverse ragioni e che voglio passare all'industria, quindi no post doc, ma comunque ho diverse opzioni sul tavolo.

Una di queste (e anche la più naturale se vogliamo) è quella di andare nella finanza come quant researcher / quant trader / risk (potrei avere qualche porta aperta/contatto su questo). Sicuramente queste tematiche mi interessano molto (leggo giornali di settore, cerco di stare un po' al passo con il mercato) ed è una carriera ben pagata, ma non so se sono disposto a pagare il prezzo in termini di work-life balance e anche stress che questo genere di carriere richiede.

La seconda opzione è il tech come Research Engineer, Software Engineer etc. Io sono una persona abbastanza entusiasta di tecnologia e sono anche molto interessato al "prodotto", ma anche alle aziende in generale come progetto imprenditoriale.

Le cose che so per sicuro sono:

1. Non voglio più stare in accademia
2. Mi paice costruire prodotti o comunque avere un impatto molto diretto nel business (quindi immagino no consulenza)
3. Non mi sento molto ferrato per ruoli molto di ricerca (quindi Research Scientist)
4. Non ho paura di fare salti nonostante il mio dottorato
5. Vorrei avere un po' di stabilità (quindi no startup early stage)
6. Vorrei guadagnare una decente quantità di soldi (basta vita da dottorando hah)

Avete qualche consiglio da dare a questo povero dottorando?

E' una situazione in cui vi ci siete ritrovati in passato? Come avete trovato la vostra via?

I will try to keep the post short. I am a PhD student at the intersection of ML and Finance, nearing the end of my studies. My PhD was not that successful compared to my peers (few works, some of them I am still trying to publish), no top-tier conf publications (NeurIPS, ICML and stuff) but I am doing the PhD at a decent university (now abroad at a more reputable university).

The time is coming to decide what to do next and I am a little bit lost. For sure I want to go into industry, but there are still plenty of options. One of them is going into the finance industry as quant research / quant trader / risk. I enjoy finance, but I am afraid that even though in the short run I would get more money, the work-life balance would be really bad.

The other option is tech, but still plenty of options (Research Engineer, Software Engineer, etc.).

The things that I know for sure are:

1. I don't want to stay in academia
2. I like to build products (thus I guess that all the consultancy stuff is a big no)
3. I don't feel that tailored to roles that are too much into research (i.e., Research Scientist)
4. I am not afraid to jump into different things despite my PhD
5. I would like to have a bit of stability (no early-stage startups)
6. I want to earn a decent amount of money (I am tired of PhD life)

That said: Do you have any suggestions to give to this poor PhD student?
