U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin granted final approval of the settlement, the largest known settlement of a U.S. copyright case, rejecting arguments that it was too small.
While some may consider this a big 'Win' over AI usage. It must be clarified that this wasn't for the use of the books in AI training, which was already deemed 'fair use'.
The fine itself was for piracy claims, Anthropic amassed such a large collection of books that the judge found them to be in violation.
>Alsup ruled last June that Anthropic made fair use of the authors' work to train Claude, but found that the company violated their rights by saving more than 7 million pirated books to a "central library" that would not necessarily be used for AI training.
So not so much a 'Big win' over AI, as much as it is over piracy of the initial datasets that Claude was trained from. It may make companies like Anthropic think twice about how they acquire data and to what extent.
In case you find anyone trying to frame it as a giant win against AI.
I'm also still gathering enough materials to make a follow up to the court cases thread, when there's an applicable amount I'll update in due time.
A good video from Kyle Hill on AI Water Usage, I think he's a pretty fair rounded scientific perspective.
Ello folks, not sure you saw this already (sorry if repost). A user on Twitter 'X', showed me this one. Seems Sony are fully embracing AI development and usage. This was a "Form 20-F for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026", source below.
Can't say I'm too surprised but it's nice to see them speak highly of the developments.
