Just got accepted into SCAD Atlanta for Illustration — what should I expect from the program?

Hey everyone, I recently got accepted into SCAD Atlanta for Illustration and wanted to hear from current students or graduates about the program.

How are the professors, workload, critiques, networking opportunities, and overall experience? Are there any classes, concentrations, or skills I should focus on early?

I’m pretty strong with realism and rendering, but I still want to improve a lot when it comes to drawing characters, stylization, and concept art/visual development. Do you think the program helps students grow in those areas even if they’re not perfect going in?

I’m interested in commercial illustration, branding, visual development, and eventually building my own fashion/lifestyle brand, so I’d love to hear how flexible the program is career-wise.

Also, what are some things you wish you knew before starting at SCAD Atlanta?

Hey everyone,

I’m a veteran looking to pursue a degree in Illustration, and I’d love some guidance from people who’ve gone through art school or work in the industry.

Right now, I’m strongly considering SCAD and MICA because of their reputations, resources, and illustration programs. My interests sit around illustration, visual storytelling, concept art, and possibly animation, and I’m aiming for a school that really pushes portfolio quality and industry readiness.

Since I’m a veteran using education benefits, I’m also thinking about value, outcomes, and long-term career flexibility—not just prestige.

Are there other illustration programs you’d recommend that I should seriously look into?

Any insight on:

•	Program strengths or weaknesses

•	Portfolio focus

•	Industry connections

•	Veteran experiences at these schools

would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance 🙏
