sorry if this sort of post isn’t allowed, but I’m struggling to get guidance on making a portfolio. I am in the early stages of considering applying though scad is somewhere I’ve wanted to go for a while. I’m not sure if I want to go for illustration, character design, or sequential art, would it be best to focus my portfolio or include all three? would any of this art make good portfolio pieces, and in your opinion, do I have the potential to get a good scholarship? should I add studies like figure drawing and such? I’m also wondering if you should include multiple drawings together or keep them separate. all sorts of questions and I don’t really know where to go for answers.

im going to do more research but would appreciate some guidance, or if you have any resources.

As somebody who’s gonna go to scad for the first time this fall and is about to graduate soon, what are some fun things to and not to do in the area or at scad?

5 absences

I've just failed a class from having 5 absences. the classes end on may 28th. I have three more class days in this class. Should I bother even showing up to class and finishing the last project? Me finishing the project won't fix my 5 absences. So me finishing is kind of pointless but I want opinions from upperclassmen. Should I show up to classes and finish my project?

Rising Star

Hi!!! I was accepted into SCADs Rising Star program in Savannah and I'm looking for friends and/or roommates! My pronouns are she/her. I love acting, singing, and production design(lighting specifically). I love listening to music like Kpop and I'm getting into rock. I also love watching movies and musicals. I'm super open-minded, love meeting new people and love talking about my interests! While I love talking I do need a little time to myself sometimes. I can be a little messy but I know how to keep clean!

If you wanna be friends lmk!!

Question about shipping packages

I’m living at the Hive and getting ready to pack things up for home. I have several large boxes of stuff that I need to ship back to Texas.

How would I go about this? I do not have a car or wagon to carry the boxes around. I only have 2 small suitcases and a backpack. The nearest USPS is around a 20 minute walk. Please help 🙏🏻

feeling unfulfilled

Hi! I'm a first year film student, but I'm just... unsure about my path in life. I've always had a passion for helping people and nearly went to nursing school instead. I live film, it's a huge part of my life and my interests, but I just feel unfulfilled. I'm not sure if it's this end of quarter slump or what. It probably doesn't help that I keep hearing horror stories of the job market being oversaturated and people being unable to find jobs after graduation.

I try to talk to my mom about this, but she assumes it's all just anxiety and tells me I'll be fine if I just work hard. Maybe she's right, but I still feel so unsure. I come from a really low-income family (here on exclusively student loans and federal aid), and the idea of having to tell her I want to change my career path makes me feel like puking. I know she would understand, but I just feel awful.

I'm really just looking for advice. Did everyone else feel this way, or is it a sign?

Just got accepted into SCAD Atlanta for Illustration — what should I expect from the program?

Hey everyone, I recently got accepted into SCAD Atlanta for Illustration and wanted to hear from current students or graduates about the program.

How are the professors, workload, critiques, networking opportunities, and overall experience? Are there any classes, concentrations, or skills I should focus on early?

I’m pretty strong with realism and rendering, but I still want to improve a lot when it comes to drawing characters, stylization, and concept art/visual development. Do you think the program helps students grow in those areas even if they’re not perfect going in?

I’m interested in commercial illustration, branding, visual development, and eventually building my own fashion/lifestyle brand, so I’d love to hear how flexible the program is career-wise.

Also, what are some things you wish you knew before starting at SCAD Atlanta?

How important is the portfolio in SCAD admissions, and what should it actually include?

Hi everyone! My daughter is a Grade 11 student applying to SCAD next cycle, likely for Illustration (Visual Development) or Sequential Art BFA. She's a working illustrator with a strong anime/manga style and some commercial clients already.

I have two questions I'd love honest input on:

  1. How much does the portfolio actually matter vs. GPA/transcripts?
I've read the official line that portfolio is central, but I'm curious how much weight it really carries in practice — especially for international students. If the portfolio is not strong but grades are strong, does SCAD still admit?

  2. What does a competitive portfolio actually look like?
The official requirement says 10-20 pieces, but:
    - Is it better to show range or depth in one style?
    - Does SCAD admissions respond well to anime/manga aesthetics, or do they prefer a more "Western" illustration style?
    - Should there be life drawing / observational work included, or is digital illustration fine on its own?
    - Any pieces you wish you had included (or left out)?

Any insight from current students or recent admits would be really appreciated — especially anyone in Illustration or Sequential Art. Thanks!

Question for people who lived in the Savannah campus

Hello, I’m a student in Florida who is trying to finish my A.A degree so then I can transfer to SCAD and the Savannah campus seems the closest to me. BUT, I have seen some videos on TikTok about how expensive and dangerous is to lived in Savannah. Is it true? Because I either hear that is “VERY haunted” or “VERY dangerous that you should always be careful where you walk”. If you can give me your honest opinion I will appreciate because tiktok is not helpful and is making me overthink if I should go to the Atlanta campus because they are saying it’s “safer”.

Please be kind in the comments I genuinely don’t know anything and I wish to get honest opinions from people who have experienced living over there.

Board game meetup tonight 6 PM at The Gallery Espresso

Join us for a casual night of board games. New people are very welcome. You do not need to know anyone, and you do not need to be an experienced board gamer. I’ll bring several easy-to-learn games, and we’ll help people get into groups when they arrive.

We’ll mostly play light to medium games that can be taught quickly, with a mix of social games, strategy games, party games, and modern board games. Feel free to bring a game you’d like to play!

I’ll be there a little early and will help people find the group. Look for the board games on the table.

Rate My Scholarship Portfolio

Hello! I was already accepted into scad today but don’t yet know how much scholarship I’m receiving for my portfolio. Just thought I’d post it here and see what people think. I’m going for a B.F.A. in Film & Television, potentially with a minor in photography.

In order, the photos are titled: “Where I Am Not”, “A Light in the Distance”, “What Has Fallen”, “An Echo”, “Salvation”, “What Still Stands”, and “Inside”

Edit: The banding on images #2 and #5 isn’t in the original photos, it’s just a Reddit issue

Stolen Dog

Please help! Brisket has been stolen!

On 5/5/26 Brisket was taken from the Humane Society of greater Savannah. The man who did was captured on security footage and can be seen taking Brisket from her kennel and leaving in his car with her. Brisket is 6 months old and was just spayed on 5/1 (less than a week ago). If anyone in Savannah knows who this man is or sees Brisket, please let the Humane Society know.

View the footage at humanesocietysav.org/brisket

Edit: the humane society believes that the car was a 2007-2009 Kia Sorento

Hey guys! I’m an incoming freshman and will have a good amount of transferrable IB credit under my belt come fall. My goal is to either graduate early OR take more electives with this credit.

My question is, do any of you have experience with getting out of classes via IB/AP Credit? What did your schedule look like as a result? Did you take multiple studios a quarter, and if so, what was that like? Are you on track to graduate early? I’m an incoming writing major fyi. Thanks!

Incoming Savannah campus freshman here! So I'm heavily a theatre kid, really what I want to do at the end of the day is musical theatre. I also love animation and art, though. One of the big factors in my choosing SCAD was the ability to study both performing arts and visual arts at the same time. That being said, I understand it'll be a lot of work. Just how screwed am I if I try to do Acting (Musical Theatre) and 2D Animation (Character Design) together?
