I'm looking at a lot of sticks but the ones with more than 8 buttons seem to be either rare or cost a lot. I've seen people drill holes into their current sticks to add extra buttons but I haven't been able to find any guides on the process that don't involve making one from scratch.

How do people go about adding these extra buttons on their own? Can they be mapped to R3 and L3? Does it depend on the PCB of the stick? I'm looking mainly at Mayflash and 8BitDo if it makes any difference.
