Perona Yamato Theorycrafting

Red Yamato is filler until [I've Come Here To Cut Those Chains!] comes out on the sim. I was already thinking about running Chains over DMG in my current Perona list purely because it seemed like a better all rounder option for Perona, it being a mill 5 that can res a Ryuma for one don less then her 8 don event but then I thought about it. Since Perona plays the game slow and grindy, 6c Yamato offers hand cycle and 8c Unblockable Yamato helps put on pressure by being a body that can either go at life, pressuring hand resources or clearing board that then can recycle itself into 6c Yamato to restart the cycle. Add in Nami as a searcher for the event and the Yamatos that can fill trash, it helps continue to advance her gameplan of building up for Moria who can just keep playing out handrip Perona and blocker Perona.

There's parts I am thinking of swapping around as well like Ground Death for Yellow Lotus just so I have more removal options, maybe cutting a Blocker Perona and the 4c Ryumas for 4c Ace because of his 2 card hand rip on KO can be a good punishment/deterrent who can give don to the unblockable Yamato while also being another target for the Moria. Hell, the possibilty of using Ace opens up the possibility of using Double Attack Ryuma or maybe doing a Ryuma focused Perona build. Just seems like there's a lot of possibility for wack with the new Bamato cards and since I am going to be building her, why not try them out in my pet deck of Perona as well at that point?

Don Krieg In This Meta?

I been grinding out a lot of Perona on the sim against my friends and one of them told me to “end my suffering” and just play Don Krieg instead since he functionally does the green parts of Perona better while having a stronger defensive then her which I agree with, having played him for a few games now. I also seen how dirt cheap he is (I mean a 16 AUD Leader Alt is wild) so now I’m wondering why is he unpopular and how much suffering he is in comparison to my other two decks (Perona and Reiju) if he’s worth the effort of building.

3-2 On Perona at Locals Tonight

Finally could afford the time (and money) to attend my most popular locals and since next week is a regionals for us in OCE, I knew I was going to be fighting the cream of the crop meta decks. I drafted my deck specifically to hate on Penel while taking out the weird jank options I had for the sake of 8c event shenanigans and it worked. I fought three Penels and won all three games but then fought B Crocodile and BY Luffy.

The Penels: Basically my deck is geared to counter their decks but it can still be a up hill battle. The 4c Ryuma and 6c Ryuma helps out a lot with low body clearing in conjunction with Perona leader ability, even gets around that new Franky blocker I seen the Penels running now. The new Finger Pistol (Yellow Lotus) deals with Reiju blocker since it removes on base cost and DMG can rest them if I need to. 7c Luffy being 9K that can give Perona 7K on opp turn helps a lot with the defending against the big bodies. Basically once I’m able to reach 8 and establish a 6c Ryuma and a 7c Luffy, you just keep finding ways to put on the board the Perona Blocker (for recurring the Perona searcher/Cindry mill to beef up Luffy) and 5c Perona (with Perona’s cost reduction, 5c Perona can freeze a big body and a small problem body like Franky). The only downside is if Penel can keep doing Kiten into Dragon/El Thor on your pieces, especially annoying when it’s Gamma but that’s more of a temporary inconvenience because all but 7c Luffy are a target for the 8c Event so it’s easy to re-establish what’s lost.

B Crocodile: This was going fine actually until the final 3 turns. Basically did my usual gameplan (get Trash to ten with a 6c Body in it at least, roll out the usual board over two turns by using a 6c Moria to summon a 4c Hogback which recurs the 8c event back to hand) but then over the last 3 turns, he hits me with 3 8c Crocs, locking down my board and a single ground death on final turn on my blocker seals the deal.

BY Luffy: I got knowledge checked by this MU. I didn’t know how to fight BY Luffy and thought I was winning for a while, especially because I was able to remove Rush Luffy with Finger Pistol and keep his big body cards on lockdown with 5c Perona. I just didn’t realise bro could go from like 0 life to 3 life off of one card and the gameplan is to actually keep him at 1-2 life until you can confirm game so he just outvalued me with his overwhelming life gains.

If I’m going to change anything here, I would say cut the 4c Recycle Peronas for something else. I’m clinging onto her because I really love the art of her and since I’m running less Peronas now, I can actually use her 2K boost but with that new Yamato event (I’ve Come To Cut Those Chains) and 7c Luffy being the actual win con now, I would cut both her and DMG for three of that new event and 1 copy of Yellow Lotus. For 7 Don, it trashes your deck (which is good for this deck and 7c Luffy) and plays out a 6/4c Ryuma while still having a counter on par of DMG’s one. Basically, it’s a weaker 8c event that I can play on curve when forced to go first. Lowkey though, I was so close to giving up and playing P Doffy because it’s becoming harder and harder to justify playing this but if I can hate on Penel and his unending flow of cards until he’s chased out of the meta by OP16 (hopefully), I’ll keep playing this BS. I might even play this at Regionals next week (if I get in off the wait list).
