Hiring and Background Check
This may be normal for Autozone or retail automotive stores, but I have not seen this before. I have a family member who applied with the local Autozone, had an interview, and was offered a job, all within the span of a few days. Autozone sent them a formal electronic notice, I think it was email, with a start date, all the salary and benefit info, etc., and said it wanted them available on Monday, May 11. They accepted the offer, which arrived on a Monday afternoon, and they then gave their current employer one week's notice so they could be available to start on the requested date at Autozone. Monday comes around, and the store says, "We are still waiting on your background check." WTF? Is that normal? I have never heard of a company making a formal offer of employment with a start date, only to then tell the new employee, " We have to now wait for your background check to see if you qualify".
The family member is now jobless and has no idea how long the background check will take. They had previously worked for the same company for 7 years in an automotive repair shop. Now they have no income. Has this happened to you, or is this normal for Autozone hiring?
Thanks in advance for any advice or insight into how Autozone hires. The family member is extremely excited to begin a career with Autozone, but now feels they are being strung along and need to start working. They have bills to pay.
FYI - Position is retail/delivery; they are 25, have no criminal history, never been in a car accident, and have worked the same automotive service station job since high school in 2019.
