Languages don't divide the world in the same way

We sometimes imagine that languages are just different labels for the same things.

But they are actually not.

One language may have a single word for something another language needs a whole sentence to explain. Another may make a distinction that simply isn't important in your own language.

And that's where things get interesting.

Learning another language can make you notice ideas, relationships, and even small details that you had never really needed to think about before.

You're not always just learning new words, sometimes you're learning new places to look for.

Welcome to r/IgishaLanguages

Hey buddies!

I'm Arsa, one of the founding moderators here.

This community is for the things that make languages interesting: learning experiences, unusual words, language stories, useful resources, and the little discoveries you come across along the way.

Whether you're learning a language, speak several, or you're simply curious, you're welcome here.

We're just getting started, so feel free to look around and make yourself at home.

Kinyarwanda speakers

A question for people who speak Kinyarwanda and another language:

What is one thing you find surprisingly difficult to translate into Kinyarwanda?

Not necessarily a single word. It could be an expression, a feeling, a joke, or something that sounds completely natural in English, French, Swahili, or another language but becomes awkward when you try to say it in Kinyarwanda.

I'm curious to see the examples people come up with.
