Hey!

I have a very good professor, and I can choose between two possible directions with him for my Master’s thesis topic.

One option is LLM-Based Data Augmentation for Recommender Systems, and the other is Relevance-Aware Retrieval Augmentation for Open-Domain Question Answering.

He is mainly experienced in NLP and LLMs, but he also teaches Recommender Systems. Both topics are interesting to me, so my main question is: which direction would be more worth pursuing in your opinion? Should I focus more on Recommender Systems, or on RAG?

MSc hallgató vagyok, és most kell szakdolgozat témát választani. Van egy kiváló professzor, és van nála egy érdekes téma is. A Relevance-Aware RAG, ez szerintetek mennyire aktuális téma? Gondolkozok PhD-n is, azért is érdekel, hogy ez a téma mennyire tovább vihető és "jövő képes".

I currently need to choose a topic for my MSc thesis. I have already selected a topic that I am interested in: “LLM-based data augmentation for recommender systems.”

I have also spoken with the supervisor. She sent me around 10 research papers and said that I should “find something novel” to work on.

Unfortunately, I do not have any concrete ideas yet within this topic. We only started learning about recommender systems this semester, so I do not have a deep understanding of the field yet. However, I find the topic itself very interesting.

Would you perhaps be able to suggest some ideas or possible directions I could explore?
