I only wanted a few Blu-rays… and somehow ended up with 60+ 🤦♂️
I’m originally from India, where physical media is almost extinct now. Finding Blu-rays especially movies in native regional Indian languages is extremely difficult as all the movie production studios have moved to OTT and even English Blu-rays can be expensive.
I moved to Canada for work, and now that my time here is coming to an end, I thought I’d buy just a few English movies before heading back.
I’ve always had a childhood dream of building a proper home theater. Now that I’ve saved some money, I figured it was finally time to put some of it toward that dream.
I started watching YouTube videos and searching online for movies with amazing picture quality and immersive Atmos sound. That led to Dune Part 1 & 2, Dunkirk, Ford v Ferrari, Ready Player One and then things escalated quickly.
It’s been barely a month and I now have 60+ movie titles, most of them new and the rest used Blu-rays from a bookstore near my home.
I've already spent close to $800 CAD on the discs, and then realized I don't even have a 4K Blu-ray player back home just xbox series X. 🤦♂️
So, I bought two ,A Sony X700U ($CAD 438) and a Panasonic UB820 ($CAD 598) for the Dolby Vision & HDR10.
The internet says the UB820 is fantastic, especially because of the HDR Optimizer. But I want to see the difference myself. If I can genuinely see the improvement, I'll keep the Panasonic and return the Sony. If not, the UB820 goes back and I save some money.
Eventually I'm planning a Dolby Atmos home theater, and in my mind, building an Atmos system without giving it a proper source is like buying a Ferrari and putting cheap tires on it. 😂
The funny part is that I'm normally extremely careful with money. I'm the guy who keeps a phone for five years. So yes, there's definitely some buyer's remorse kicking around.
But I've started telling myself: what's the point of saving money forever if you never spend some of it on something that genuinely makes you happy?
That said, I seriously need to stop buying Blu-rays now. My collection is already ridiculous, but my brain is STILL browsing the marketplace looking for “just one more” movie. 😂
At this point, my next challenge isn't building the home theater. It's convincing airport security that 60+ Blu-rays are, in fact, a perfectly normal “personal collection” and not a small-scale movie distribution business. 😂
