Is anyone else confused by "6-8 years of GenAI / MCP / RAG experience" in job postings?
I keep seeing job postings that ask for 6, 7, or even 8 years of experience in generative AI, or in "AI engineering" with things like RAG, embeddings, agents, and MCP.
I get that some of them may mean a mix of software engineering, machine learning, and AI. Machine learning is much older, so maybe they count those years. And some probably just mean "6 years as an engineer, and now you work with AI".
But a lot of postings clearly say GenAI itself. ChatGPT came out at the end of 2022, so that is about 4 years. The term RAG comes from a 2020 paper. MCP is only about 2 years old. Nobody can have 6 years of real production experience in these.
So how do you read these requirements? Do you apply anyway? Does anyone know if the number is real, or is it just a copy-paste from an old template?
Curious what recruiters, hiring managers, and people who got hired in this field think.
