Order and Timeline of NYPD Hiring Process

I recently took the NYPD exam and wanted to verify if this is the correct order of the hiring steps:

Written Exam → Medical Exam → Job Standard Test (JST) → Background Investigation → Written and Oral Psychological Exams → Appointment and Academy.

Do you start the hiring process before receiving your list number, or do you have to wait until you get one?Do the steps always happen in this order, or can they vary? How long after taking the exam does the hiring process usually begin, and approximately how much time is there between each step?

I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has recently gone through the process. Thanks!

a Huge Gap Between Canvassed Candidates and Academy Hires

I noticed the major change on the NYS Courts website for Exam 45-843. The official page previously showed that canvassing had reached Rank 1 – 5,630, with scores down to 84.1, but it now shows canvassing has reached Rank 1 – 12,737 with scores 107.3 – 74.1. What concerns me is that when the list showed Rank 5,630, only around 270 candidates reportedly made it to the first academy class. Now they have gone another 7,107 ranks lower, down to Rank 12,737. If roughly another 270 candidates make it into the next academy class, that would mean only about 540 candidates out of 12,737 have made it to the academy, leaving approximately 12,197 candidates who did not make it through the process. Obviously, this is very concerning. Does anyone know why there is such a large gap between the number of candidates being canvassed and the number ultimately making it to the academy?

Future of The NYS Court Officer Exams.

Hey everyone,

I took:

* Exam #45-815 (Statewide)(Sept. 7 – Dec. 10, 2021) — I passed, but unfortunately my score was too low and I was never called. That list eventually became inactive.

* Exam #45-843 (Downstate)(Sept. 10 – Oct. 31, 2025) — I passed again, but once again my score wasn't high enough to get called before the list became inactive.

* Exam #45-857 (Statewide)(Aug. 26 – Oct. 7, 2026) — I'm really hoping this is the one. I believe I scored high enough this time to have a realistic chance of getting called.

My question is: Has anyone heard any rumors about another NYS Court Officer exam being announced after exam# 45-857?

Do you think the Court will give another exam relatively soon after exam# 45-857, or are we probably looking at a long wait (possibly several years)?

I'm asking because I've already gone through the process twice, passed both times, but didn't get appointed because of my rank. I really don't want to miss my opportunity this time, but I'm also wondering what the backup plan would be if my exam# 45-857 rank somehow isn't high enough.

Do you think exam# 45-857 list could potentially remain the main list for several years?

Any information, rumors, or educated guesses are appreciated.

Thanks!

NYS Court Officer Exam #45-857: Upstate vs Downstate Selection

>For the STATEWIDE NYS COURT OFFICER EXAM#45-857, applicants who file for the exam and schedule their test date are asked to select where they would like to work: Upstate or Downstate. However, the scheduling process only allows the applicant to choose one option, not both.

If an applicant selects Downstate, passes the written exam, but receives a lower score that may not be high enough to be reached for Downstate positions, would that applicant still have a chance of being considered for Upstate Court Officer openings?

Does selecting Upstate or Downstate during the exam scheduling process permanently limit an applicant to that region, or can candidates be considered for the other region later if vacancies are available?

Has anyone gone through this process or know how the NYS Court Officer hiring list works regarding regional selection?

Thank you for any information.

Will NYS Unified Court System continue using Downstate Exam #45-843 list before Statewide Exam #45-857 list replaces it?

I am trying to understand how the New York State Unified Court System will handle the remaining time and candidates on the NYS Court Officer Downstate Exam#45-843 list.

Downstate Exam#45-843 list was established on January 28, 2026, and the first academy class from this list started on July 6, 2026.

My question is:

After the New York State Unified Court System already selected candidates from Downstate Exam#45-843 list for the July 6 academy class, will they continue selecting additional candidates from this same list for another academy class while the July class is still in training?

Also, after those candidates graduate (around December 2026), if the Downstate Exam#45-843 list remains active till The new NYS Court Officer Statewide Exam#45-857 list be established around January 2027 and replaces it, do candidates still remaining on the Downstate Exam#45-843 list have a realistic chance of being reached for another academy class?

Thank you.

I wanted to see if anyone has recent info on the downstate Court Officer exam list (45-843). Are they still calling people for the PAT, or have they basically reached their hiring needs?

I know there’s an academy scheduled around July, and with the new statewide exam (45-857) coming up in August, plus a new list expected early next year, I’m wondering if it’s basically over for those of us still on the current list.

Has anyone recently been contacted for PAT? Or does it seem like they’re done pulling from this current list?
