Can you change departments after starting a cruise ship job?

Hi everyone!

I’m considering working on a cruise ship and I was wondering how easy or difficult it is to change departments once you’re already working for a cruise line.

For example, let’s say I start in housekeeping as a cabin steward. Would it be possible to move into a completely different area later, such as retail/sales, guest services, or another department?

Can this happen during the same contract, or would I normally need to finish my contract and apply for a different position for the next one?

I’d especially love to hear from people who actually changed departments while working on cruise ships. How did the process work for you? Did having previous experience with the cruise line make it easier to get the new position?

Thanks! :)

Is it possible to work in sales with no experience?

I have absolutely no experience working on cruise ships and sales; however, I speak 4 languages and I'm very communicative. I'd really love to work for NCL or Virgin Voyages. I'm 27F.

Is it possible to start working on a cruise ship with no previous experience?
What jobs would they hire me for with absolutely no experience?

Also, is there an age limit for working on cruise ships? For example, if I were 40, would they still hire me?

My 16-year-old Cocker Spaniel is in palliative care and I'm scared

My Cocker Spaniel is 16 years old (she'll turn 17 in November) and is currently receiving palliative care. She has liver cancer and is on medication, but she's become very thin, weak, and has little energy to walk. Lately, she's also been eating and drinking much less than usual.

I'm really worried because she spent her entire life living with me and my parents (before I moved out). About a year ago, I moved in with my boyfriend to another place. My parents are currently traveling abroad, so my dog is staying with me for about two weeks.

The problem is that since arriving at my apartment, she has shown almost no interest in food or water. She has been here before and stayed for a few days last year, so it's not a completely unfamiliar place, but she still seems very reluctant to eat or drink. I've tried several things already, but nothing seems to work.

I'm considering making some steamed chicken and carrots for her, since chicken is one of the few foods she has always loved. The only things she's consistently enjoyed throughout her life are bread (especially the soft inside) and chicken. Normally, she would eat bread and dog food, but right now she doesn't even seem interested in her regular food.

Has anyone gone through something similar with a senior dog in palliative care? Could the change in environment be affecting her appetite, or is this more likely related to the progression of her illness? Do you have any suggestions for encouraging her to eat or drink?

I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed and scared right now, and I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences you can share.

estou me sentindo um completo fracasso (profissionalmente)

Meninas, preciso muito desabafar porque ultimamente estou me sentindo completamente perdida.

Eu amo viajar, conhecer lugares e culturas diferentes.

e

27F, unemployed with a humanities background and completely lost about what career to pursue next. What should I do?

I'm 27F and I'm at a point where I genuinely don't know what career direction to take anymore.

I know I'm very privileged, and I don't want this to come across as ungrateful. I have a boyfriend I love very much, good and loyal friends, a family that cares about me, and a comfortable life, also in terms of $$. But professionally, I'm a mess right now. I was recently fired, and I've started seriously questioning whether the field I chose has much of a future.

I have a degree in Linguistics, which I finished about 7 years ago. When I was younger, I had a dream of becoming a translator for the UN. I absolutely loved languages, and honestly, my entire youth was built around them. I learned English, Italian, Russian and Spanish (Portuguese is my native language), studied Linguistics, and spent years doing things related to languages because it genuinely made me happy.

At the time, I obviously had no way of knowing how much AI would change writing and translation. Now I look back and sometimes feel like I spent years developing skills that are becoming less valuable.

The problem is that I don't have an obvious "backup" field. I'm genuinely terrible at maths, chemistry, physics, biology, etc. I also absolutely hate coding, development and IT. So the usual advice of "just learn programming" or "go into tech" really doesn't work for me.

My actual strengths are things like languages, writing, research, communication, history, culture and the humanities.

I'm trying to find a career where those skills could still be useful, where I could realistically make a decent living, and where I won't constantly be worried that AI is going to replace most of what I do in a few years.

And I'm struggling.

I've even thought about doing something completely different, like working on a cruise ship. I love travelling and learning about different cultures, and the idea of working while seeing the world is extremely appealing to me. Part of me thinks it could actually be a great experience.

But I also don't want to make a huge impulsive decision just because I'm panicking about my career.

Most importantly, I don't want to become financially dependent on my boyfriend or my parents. My boyfriend is wonderful and I love him very much, but I really want to be able to support myself.

I'm also scared of making another big investment in education. I don't want to spend another 2–5 years getting another degree, only to graduate and discover that the job market has changed again.

So I'm basically trying to figure out what realistic options I actually have.

If you were in my position, what careers would you seriously consider?

Especially interested in hearing from people who:

  • came from a humanities/languages background and successfully changed careers
  • don't have strong STEM or technical skills
  • made a career change in their late 20s
  • work in fields that they believe will remain reasonably stable despite AI
  • or simply felt completely lost at 25–30 and eventually figured things out

Right now, I honestly have no idea what the heck I'm doing.

I feel completely lost at 27, even though I know how privileged I am

LONG TEXT ALERT:

I know I'm extremely privileged, and I don't want this post to sound ungrateful. I live with a boyfriend I love very much, I have good and loyal friends, I have a family that cares about me, and I have a comfortable life. I know many people would love to have what I have.

But professionally? My life is a fuck*** mess.

I was recently fired (I'm UX and tech writer), and I've started to seriously believe that the field I chose doesn't have much of a future anymore. And the frustrating part is that I couldn't possibly have known this 7 years ago, when I was finishing my degree in Linguistics.

When I was younger, I had this dream of becoming a translator for the UN. I loved languages. I spent basically my entire youth learning. I learned English, Italian, Russian, Spanish (Portuguese is my native language), and spent years studying linguistics because I genuinely loved it. Learning languages made me happy. It was a huge part of who I was and what I thought my future would look like.

But as the years went by, I started realizing that translation wasn't really the career I had imagined it would be. And now, with AI changing everything so quickly, I sometimes look back at all those years and feel like I wasted them.

And the worst part is that I don't have some obvious alternative. I'm fucking terrible at basically everything outside the humanities. Maths? Terrible. Chemistry? Terrible. Physics? Terrible. Biology? Terrible. Coding and IT? I absolutely not.

The only things I'm actually good at are humanities-related things: languages, writing, history, culture, etc.

So what the hell am I supposed to do?

I've been trying to find some other career that fits my skills but isn't going to be completely eaten by AI in the next few years, and honestly, I'm struggling to find anything.

I've even thought about just giving up on everything I have here. Leaving my comfortable life, my family, my boyfriend, and working on a cruise ship. I love travelling, I love learning about different cultures, and there's something incredibly appealing about the idea of working while travelling around the world.

And honestly, part of me feels like that could actually work for me.

But then reality hits. I'm unemployed right now, so I can't exactly just go travelling. And I don't want to become financially dependent on my parents or my boyfriend. I really, really don't want that.

And then there's my boyfriend.

This is probably the part that makes everything even more complicated. He is the only man I've ever truly loved in my entire life. He is genuinely a wonderful person and someone I believe is worth holding onto. So sometimes I think: what if I throw away the life I have with him because I'm having some kind of existential crisis, go work on a cruise ship, and end up regretting it deeply?

But at the same time, this desire to work on a cruise ship keeps coming back. It's almost like this little voice in my head saying, maybe this is the one thing that could actually work for you.

I don't know.

I feel like I have all these things that should make me happy, and I am grateful for them, but professionally I feel completely hopeless and without direction.

I don't want to spend the rest of my life depending on someone else. I don't want to choose a career just because it's "safe" and then hate my life. And I don't want to spend another 5 years studying something only to discover that AI has changed that field too.

I guess I just needed to vent.

I don't really know what I'm asking for here. Maybe I just want to hear from people who felt completely lost in their 20s and somehow found their way out of it.

Because right now, I genuinely have no idea what the f*ck I'm doing.

Gringos, what's the most difficult thing for you in Brazil?

Whether you're traveling in Brazil or living here, what has been the most difficult part of your experience? Is it the language, the bureaucracy, or something else?

A vó do meu namorado faz a mesma coisa.

Sinceramente eu me sinto um pouco desolada.

What can you expect from the master's exam and Adam Mickiewicz University?

I am applying for a master's program at the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology and would like to know what to expect from their entrance exam.

"8. Taking the entrance examination

The candidate will receive a message via the Online Admissions System about the date, place, and time of the entrance exam."

What should I expect from the college as well?

I've done a lot of research but haven't found many testimonials, some positive and some negative. I researched the city and found it interesting to live in.
