AIO for wanting to quit my job after being forced onto every Saturday?
I work at a dealership in service as a valet. When I started, Saturday shifts were rotated between me, (for the sake of privacy Ill call my other coworkers) Jake, and Marcus. We each worked one Saturday and then had two off.
Later on, one of the service writers went on paternity leave and Jake had to focus more on school, so I started taking extra Saturday shifts as a favor to help management out.
Eventually Jake switched positions and became the loaner coordinator, so he started coming in on Saturdays too. Even then, I still took on more Saturdays to help out. After a while Jake stopped working Saturdays completely, so the schedule became mostly me and Marcus rotating. At that point I was only getting one Saturday off a month, although Marcus would sometimes cover or switch for me if I needed it.
Back in late April, one of the technicians pulled me aside and asked if it was true that I was going to be working every Saturday. I told him no, and he said Marcus had told the general manager he no longer wanted to work Saturdays, and management was apparently okay with that. According to him, starting in June I would end up working every Saturday instead.
I was immediately frustrated and went straight to my assistant manager to ask if it was true. He confirmed it. I asked why nobody had sat me down to discuss it or even tell me about it directly, especially because I cannot work every Saturday.
Since then I have talked to my assistant manager about it atleast once a week…
Today I pulled my assistant manager aside again and asked if we could all sit down and talk about it. I explained that every Saturday does not work for me and that it was never the schedule I agreed to when I was hired. I told him I wanted to work something out fairly.
His response was mostly that I am part-time and that the general manager “isn’t going to be happy to hear it.”
What frustrates me most is that plans were already being made without even talking to me first. I’ve made personal plans and commitments around the schedule we had, and I only took on extra Saturdays originally as a favor to help the dealership when they were short staffed.
Now it feels like that favor has turned into an expectation, while another employee was apparently allowed to stop working Saturdays entirely. At this point I honestly feel like I’m being screwed over, and I’m considering quitting and Im currently working at finding a more flexible job instead.
TL;DR:
I was hired with rotating Saturdays, but after helping management by taking extra shifts during staffing issues, they now want me to work every Saturday permanently because another coworker doesn’t want to anymore. Management made this decision without discussing it with me first, and when I pushed back, I was basically told that because I’m part-time my concerns don’t matter.
